I was at work, listenig to In Sides, "The Box" to be precise, and a man came up to me, one I had never talked to before to tell me that the music I was listening to was beautiful. This led to many other dropping by my cube to enquire about what music I had on. Now I listen to allot of techno/IDM stuff at work, and no other artist has ellicited any reaction from the others I work at. They hate techno, yet embraced the entirety of In Sides becuase of it's beauty. I fully agree, it's layers, message, and textures all flow so nicely, while maintaing a steady driving beat. Now, on a more creative note becuase I am always looking for CDs --- Can anyone on this list post CDs that they feel are ON PAR, aka JUST AS GOOD if not better (cringe.. ) then In Sides, please do. Actually (and I'm not running down Orbital here, 'cos I think they do good stuff), they prob'ly embraced it because it is *accessible*. This is not always a bad thing, contrary to some opinions. I like Orbital (not to the point of adulation, however), but I do think they're popular because people can listen to them without hurting themselves. :-) I regularly listen to music that most people don't want to listen to because it requires too much of them or is too complex to "get" easily (Fushitsusha, John Zorn, Skinny Puppy, Coltrane, Arcana, some d'n'b, some electronica, etc.). Most people don't want to push themselves outside their preconceived notions of what "music" is like (how's *that* for a generalization?) and Orbital, I think, stays "In-Side" :-) this comfortable limit while still being complex enough to reward repeated listening and appeal to those of us who like our music "harder than most". Anyway, just my opinion and not much idm content there, sorry.... cya brian

Well there's accessible (Boyz To Men, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton) and then there's Orbital, who in my opinion, try to make music with some harmonic and emotional connection to people. Their tracks are not any less complex or involved than other IDM musicians, arguably they've got more going on. But they have never gone in for the sharp-stick-in-the-ear-fuck-yall stuff that seems these days to be the key for some sort of virtual street credibility. I can take it hard as they come -- I was listening to stuff like Ornette Coleman and Pharoah Sanders when most of you were in diapers. But I maintain that Orbital have the shit. It doesn't have to be your cup of tea, but it deserves respect on it's own terms. Maybe orbital thought of doing it then decided not too because they thought it was crap. Just a thought. No slight intended to the above artists. I just think that's a little bit presumptuous. The second thought is that something innovative is not always good. It does make interesting listening though....but may not necessarily hold up to repeated listens as well as something done really well that is not necessarily innovative. I say these things generally, not necesarily in reference to the artists you mention. Tony

Well one definately positive thing that I can say about Orbital is that they got me into electronic music beyond the industrial stuff I was listening to circa 91. If I hadn't started by listening to Orbital, I probably wouldn't have dug deeper to be listening to the stuff I am to day. They've also had a huge influence on the music that I write too. ROB:)!!!!

My education began on a chance pick from Camelot Music. Saw the green Orbital, saw U.F.Orb, picked them up, and been on the road ever since. On par with Orbital, I am always moved by Autechre. I wish I could've seen them in NY, but at least I can catch the odd video or two by them nowadays. Things are always changing...
