Just my 2 cents on the current Hawtin debate. My first exposure to RH was when he toured with Moby as Cybersonik a few years ago. I was blown away. Until then I had never heard such darn good techno apart from Underground Resistance. I do think, in fact, that his best stuff is the hard, minimal danceable stuff (like "Train-trac", which is just brilliant) but I thought that "Sheet One" was miserable--just a lot of noodly vacuous sound effects going nowhere. For that reason, I have been avoiding "Musik". A happy, hard and stompin' (and thinkin') 1995 to all. Ashok Divakaran adivakaran@worldbank.org Washington, DC

"plasticity" is not much more than a bongo line and a 5 note 303 riff, but it's sweet, nonetheless. the other extreme is the sonic assault of a song like "f.u." off of dimension intrusion thats speaker to speaker oscilations just make me swing my head like a pH enhanced stevie wonder. luv it!! the development is there and it's fascinating, it just not in evolving rhythms and themes. it's in the flanging and sweeping of the delectablly simple 303 tones that richie lays down. i still haven't found the "magic square" on the sheet1 inset, but i'm only half done with it... bottom line (IMHO), there IS a place for sparse funky minimalism, and richie's at the top of the peak in that genre. -- Jeff Davis ____--~~~~~~vvvv~~~~ oo jjdavis@xnet.com____---- ( ( ( vvvv ~~~~~~ooooooooooo ___----( ( \ \ \ \ \ vvv oooooooooooooo 812.831.7846 ____---- ( \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ vvooooooooooooooooooooo

"Musik" is my favorite by far Plastikman release. It's ultra-minimal danceable techno. It's more beat-driven than some of his more recent stuff, but still minimal enough that it's tempting to call it ambient (if only it didn't make you tap your feet!) As for his live stuff, "Decks, EFX & 909" is more like what he plays out, if you've ever seen him. "DE9" is a little mellower with more soft basslines, as opposed to the crunchy ones on the former. I prefer the former, personally, but YMMV, of course. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It depends on what you like. Personally, I like DE9 because I'm not a fan of his bang-a-thon material. I also like the "Consumed" and "Sickness" Plastikman phase. jeff At 07:53 AM 1/19/2002, rmartin wrote:

If you can still find it, I thoroughly recommend 'Sheet One' cause this defined both Hawtin's sound and also the minimalist techno that followed. 'Smak' is my favourite track from it. You may also like to try (slightly more ambient) the 'From Within' series on FAX/Ambient World/M-nus. These all show Hawtin's trademark minimalism, and also Namlook's ambience... My next hawtin is the 'DE9' album. ----- Original Message ----- From: "rmartin" <rmartin@ntlworld.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, January 19, 2002 1:53 PM Subject: [idm] Richie Hawtin Can anyone recommend the best Richie Hawtin albums to get? I recommend skipping it and proceeding straight to his closer to the edit project, If for no other reason the source material on closer to the edit is a lot more interesting <insert IMHO disclaimer here>. Closer to the edit is a studio crafted mega-mix of loops and samples derived from a stack of vinyl (most frequently some dubbed up perlon and mosaic releases). Another similar 'mix cd and then some' that just got released is Algorithm's composure mix which is pretty much an album length remix of all the force tracks releases. ~g -- Greg Smith http://www.technowest.org http://www.laiad.com http://www.mediawhore.cc <-- coming soon to a theatre near you --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

if you're looking for some subtle minimalism, then check out his whole production under the plastikman-moniker: records like artifakts (bc), consumed and musik are true masterpieces. hawtin has also done a three-album series of ambient recordings with pete namlook, and i personally love that stuff. it's called 'from within' and it's out on FAX / minus. richie's de9-albums are also worth to check out. imo the newest 'de9: closer to the edit' album is better than the first, since it's got much more groove and funk to it. -metsis --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
