To use Reason effectively, you need to use lots of compressors and EQ to give your sounds the dimensions they need. I think you're right that there's a certain flatness to things you do with Reason using the most straightforward techniques. But hey, if you're still starting out, you really don't have the background in production to get it to sit up and bark. It wouldn't hurt to spend a few afternoons at a good library reading Electronic Musician, EQ, Tape Op, and Keyboard, for some good tutorials on sound and mixing.
