So why do I have so many CD's that have 'EP' in the title? Just because the original reasons for the distinction don't all cross over into the digital realm doesn't mean the distinction doesn't still exist, or that the terminology of vinyl isn't just as useful applied to CD. Do you get angry when people call a 33 RPM record an "album," because it's supposed to refer to a set of 78's? This is one of those language things where there is NOT any consistent good terms anymore. I've always liked "album" meaning a collection of songs/tracks, just like a photo "album". However, people persist in identifying "album", "record" and "LP" with the 12-inch vinyl full-length thingy. Which leaves no word to cover the collection of tracks independant of format. AND, further muddying the waters: I just received a "full length" full price :-) CD which was 32 minutes. Whereas I own 3 The Prodigy CD "singles" all of which are longer than 32 minutes, but cost half as much as this "full length" CD... In terms of your specific question, "12-inch" means vinyl "single" and "LP" means about 40 minute long 12-inch vinyl. So "the vinyl release of the LP has been deleted" is indeed redundant. BUT, what could he say? "The vinyl release of the oogbleck has been deleted"? respect, Ken Ken.Stuart@tigerteam.org --- * UniQWK v2.0 * The Windows Mail Reader / Tiger Team Buddhist Information Network / / Modem (510) 268-0102 info@tigerteam.org /

Actually, it was a bit of a braino. If I'd been thinking, I'd have said "the vinyl release of the album". Of course, as someone else on this list pointed out, the original meaning of "album" is a collection of 78's. (An album, being too long to fit on a single disc, came as a pack of several 78's.) Too long to fit on a single "disc"? Did they have CDs way back then? :) -kc, awaiting my AI2 & TEX2, and the latest developments on the IDM comp idea.

It was a joke. Isn't there a FAQ on this stuff somewhere? How'd this topic get started anyway? -kc

And I actually have an album of 78's; two or three if I remember correctly. They're collections of old 'standards' from, most likely, the 1940s. Wouldn't it be cool to take this music and mix it into a mix of, oh say, breakbeat? I think the breaks being about twice the speed of these 'standards' would fit well and be a very odd mix indeed. =) practice random acts of kindness steven j. white and aragorn@alpha1.csd.uwm.edu senseless acts of beauty finger for PGP 2.6 public key

I do know that the jazzy-sounding stuff on Cajmere/Dajae's "You Got Me Up" remixes are swiped from Benny Goodman! Stu 8)
