i am stuck in london ontario and the only record store that sells idm does not, in any way shape or form, let the customer hear a recording prior to its purchase. considering it has a very limited selection this has proven to be a problem. in short, i have wasted far too much money on stuff that basically stinks. (the only thing half decent i have bought there is Trance Europe Express and even that i would not call Great). keeping in mind that i like DEEP, HYPNOTIC trance i pose this question: what's the best current trance compilation you can think of? waiting in earnest......

Here's a hint - quit talking about trance on this list. This isn't directed specifically at you, Jason, so don't take it personally. I have no problem with you discussing your favorite trance hits till the cows come home, just don't do it here. Trance, as a whole, is not IDM. You may dispute this, but you'll have to be very persuasive to convince me otherwise. This is not to say that there aren't specific examples of trance that are appropriate for this list - some System 7, C.J. Bolland, and Sven Vaeth tracks come to mind - just that "the latest trance comps" are not. If you want to ask something along the lines of "have any trance tracks come out lately that I, as an IDM fan, would enjoy," that's another story entirely. Agreed. However, I think the problem lies with the fact that most of those who subscribe to this list are pretty damn knowledgeable about many different forms of techno music. For example, if I wanted to know where I could find CJ Bolland's "Horse Power" on cd (and I really do? any pointers?) I'd probably ask first here. But that's only because I think alt.rave is full of crud, and no better forum exists. Maybe some enterprising sysadmin could start a trance list to take some of the load off of IDM. ??? I think for a clear understanding of what is appropiate for IDM, we should all go back and read the Welcome Message that Fluid posted a few days ago. IMHO, it *clearly* outlines what IDM is. Just for reference, I don't mind the trance talk, as I don't really see an appropiate forum for it. But I can see how some might get annoyed at the number of messages and the content therein. Argh. I don't mean to keep these banal, silly arguments going on, but I must say that for me 'trance' and 'idm' are pretty inter-changeable. Alot more so than 'ambient' and 'idm', and two of the artists you mentioned above have alot more to do with ambient than trance. I listen to and make many different styles of music, including (sacriledge) hardcore 200bpm stuff, ambient, breaks, and trance. I'm sitting here listening to Autechre's 'incunabula' album right now, and if you were to walk into the room and ask me to describe it, i would say 'really _trancey_ music with intricate structures. Rising High's "Secret Life Of Trance 2" is an excellent, although not new, trance comp. Artists on it include Sequential, Balil (BDP), Hearts of Space, Dreamfish, and New London School of Electronics. Hey, isn't that odd, alot of these names come up often on the 'intelligent dance music' list. Oh indeed! Two of my favorite FAX tracks are "Music Hypnotizes" by 4 Voice and "Escape to Neptune" by Escape, and these two tracks are fairly kicking, not really 'hard', but are move-you-to-the-dancefloor trance. And these two artists (really Namlook collaborations) also put out ambient! When I say "trance" I usually mean dancefloor material. I'm starting to hate trying define terms nowadays...but there are plenty of IDM artists who do some kickin' stuff like the kinda trance I like! -djkc

Agreed. Intelligent techno (or IDM, if you prefer) and trance are different genres of music. As I've said before, though, it's inevitable that people are going to be tempted to discuss a broader spectrum of music on the IDM list, simply because there are no mailing lists for such genres as ambient house, house, progressive house, trance, techno, and breakbeat hardcore -- as far as I'm aware. Many of these have some overlap with intelligent techno, but they are nonetheless distinct. I agree that those genres of music are not intended to be the subject matter of this list (except in so far as they intersect with intelligent techno), but telling people to discuss their music elsewhere isn't very effective when there is no elsewhere -- you'll always be pushing against the trend for this list to become the de facto dance music list. I wish I was in a position do to something about this -- I think we badly need a trance/techno list -- but unfortunately I'm not in a position to run a list..... Just my $0.02 Cosmic

I'd widen the trance/techno label to an "electronica" list to cover _all_ aspects of electronic music; including dance-based, ambient, etc. I realise alt.rave is supposed to cover this but, well, it sucks. __ Simon Walley | 1E 76 9A 0D 78 3A 3B 1C | /\ \ <u9323899@sys.uea.ac.uk> | A1 60 73 AE 8B 0E E0 B6 | /--\_\

I'd disagree with that quite strongly. I think it's one of the best comps of the last year -- one of my favourite local dj's often spins stuff from that comp.... Cosmic

"Logic Trance" Oh... You said "current". Actually, I was just listening to "Logic Trance" today thinking about how damn good it is and how it really was a ground breaking collection. Not many recent compilations come close. "Feed Your Head" on Planet Dog was probably the last comp that I really enjoyed.

I always thought Trance Europe Express was very much IDM stuff. If we're talking trance, try Age of Trance, and both volumes of Trancesylvania Trancesylvania 2, first disc, has lotsa fast 4otFloor stuff, but there's a few that are great sounding. My favorite on there is "Rhythm of Life" by 2 of a Living (or 3, or something...can't remember...my stuff got stolen!) Anyway, the best trance will always be found on 12". Save the Vinyl! -djkc
