wow, how can you call drukqs aphex's worst album? you're wrong, all wrong. Chris Clark is one of the only electronic artists that innovates these days. He maxes out his mastering the same way funckarma do and there's certainly no clipping to be heard! His earlier stuff is definately worth a listen, if you havent already! Ah-ha... different strokes :-) Yes indeed; I've got that Mike Ink, but on CD so I know what you mean by those crackles and pops that only live on vinyl. I still can't listen to remastered versions of Led Zeppelin without desperately missing those scratches and crackles from my old albums! There - my secret's out! I currently listen to a lot of music that I consider aurally transparent; allow me to contextualise this: as a photographer, I spend much time at the computer processing images in Photoshop, which needs my concentration so I don't want to have to pay major attention to arousing / emotive / exciting music. Along similar lines, my reason for liking and following The Field is that if I can't have any new GAS tracks then I will make do with the GAS wannabes. The Sight Below falls into this category, too. I stick to cds; I like to have a physical manifestation of my purchase, and easier to deal with than vinyl. That said, the new ampoule offshoot, earplug, has caused me to make my first digital purchases recently. These are great discussions, and are useful channels of discovering new music. I can say that I've personally expanded my own collection of music by researching artists you all have on your playlists, while also learning that some are still using records in the digital age, on the arguable basis that they sound better. I'd like to push a different topic though. I've been on this list for a few months now, and through the regular analysis of current events, the dissection of albums, the occasional humorous banter about who's better and the rare, screaming ads about upcoming clubs, I haven't seen any historical discussion behind the development of the music. I'm not a music major, nor am I above thirty years old, but I'm interested in the fact that it seems to develop in certain parts of the world among certain portions of the population. So, to make this easy, indulge in your favorite intoxicant of choice and give me a solid answer to one, or all if you're willing to try, of these questions (and this was not meant to take attention from the other equally deserving topics): Disclaimer: I'm an IDM fan. Is there a scale of progression in music? By that I mean, does music progress? If so, is IDM on the forefront of the progression of music? If so, who is developing it, the intellectuals, musicians, or a hybrid of both? This question doesn't imply musicians are unintelligent. It only creates a divide between those who further knowledge, i.e. astrophysicists, and those that further culture, i.e. painters. (I know this is in itself an oversimplification.) Does the embrace of IDM or similar music indicate anything about the society that does so? How will this music evolve from here, and how can it get better? We've all heard how it can get worse (see Industrial). I'm looking forward to the responses. i assume you don't mean the electronic music newsletter earplug. but the above reminded me, that's how i heard of burial's first album, and when i read the review and listened to the mp3 link i was instantly hooked and bought the CD ASAP. i ended up joining beatport because ADULT. released a beatport- exclusive digital EP. i bought 2 tracks and found it easy and cool to have these "one-shot" songs in this format. i still don't like mp3's for most music, but a lot of electronic artists seem to have it sorted out to sound good like that. now if only digital outlets would sell FLAC or WAV files without charging a premium. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
