Speaking of shouting.... Ok, so has anyone heard this yet? I'm not really familiar with his work - I got it to review for the college radio station where I have a show. To me, the recording sounds TERRIBLE - it is twice as loud as it needed to me and it just sounds ruined. No dynamic range at all. I"m gonna load this into audacity or something when I get home for shits n' giggles, but I already know what I'm going to see. It's one thing if you're a noise artist, but this ain't noise, and even most noise has more range than this. This seems odd to me, since it was reasonably well-composed and had potential, as far as I'm concerned. I've heard a few decent reviews of this from reviewers I trust, so I'm wondering if I got a bum CD? --wendy

I did hear this and I actually thought it was amazing. I know what you're talking about the dynamic range, but I think it grew on me the more i heard it. I was driving the inland island hiway on vancouver island and had it cranked with the windows down and it sounded phenomenal. I am curious if you're hearing what im hearing tho..... Hmmm, well I did hear some SERIOUS clipping, especially during Rainbow Voodoo, which would probably have been one of my favorite tracks otherwise. I tried with headphones (the WORST, like having a baseball bat shoved in your ear), speakers, and car speakers. Did sound best with car speakers, I agree.... maybe I'll see if I can find something on the web somewhere... On Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 2:02 PM, Mantrakid <mantrakid@neferiu.com> wrote:

Oops, my bad (partially). I was listening to a high-quality VBR MP3, so later I grabbed the actual CD, threw it in the car CD player, and I've never heard such a difference. I still maintain that it's too loud and clips a bit, but I hereby upgrade my opinion from "terrible" to "recommended with reservations" and resolve to switch back to FLAC for my mobile music needs... There are so many good things I could say about Chris Clark's music that this mail could easily turn into a long rant, so I'll just leave it at this: I wish I had the patience to put so much attention to minute details and also the natural ingenuity in sound sculpting that Chris Clark possesses. His work is the most inspiring stuff that's been released on warp aside from tim exile's listening tree since drukqs... Turning dragon has to be the best one though... Cheers // Veqtor

Well I may have been too negative on this one aspect of the release. As I mentioned, I'm not familiar with his other releases. It is clear that he takes great care with the sound design, which is why I was surprised that it was so clipped, and didn't dismiss it out of hand. I'll be curious as to what others think when it comes out. --Wendy On Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 8:47 PM, <vektor@oxo-unlimited.com> wrote:

wow, how can you call drukqs aphex's worst album? you're wrong, all wrong. Chris Clark is one of the only electronic artists that innovates these days. He maxes out his mastering the same way funckarma do and there's certainly no clipping to be heard! His earlier stuff is definately worth a listen, if you havent already! Ersatz Audio/Thrill Jockey artists, the Detroit-based electro punk stalwarts ADULT. take to the decks for an exclusive dj set for JACKSON. Their signature integration of drum machines & analog synths with electronic/punk elements has defied categorization, and these undefinable points of influence are recalled whenever they tear through their thoroughly entertaining dj sets! Also just added to the bill are former Weekend Records co-horts and Chicago mainstays DJ JIM MAGAS, DJ BEAU WANZER and DJ JORDAN Z., contributing to what is sure to be a memorable night on the Sonotheque soundsystem! ADULT. [Thrill Jockey, Ersatz Audio labels - from Detroit] ADULT. began releasing albums in 1998 under the pseudonym "Plasma Co." Initially, the band members were uncredited and not publicized, but by the time Anxiety Always was released, ADULT. was listed as husband-and-wife team Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus. Miller and Kuperus are also the founders of the ERSATZ AUDIO record label. ADULT. gained popularity while touring constantly in the United States and releasing all of their material independently. They toured with Trans Am in 2002, and in May 2003, the band made its first headlining tour in the United States; gigs across Europe followed soon after. ADULT. have remixed other artists, notably Felix da Housecat, Fischerspooner, A Number of Names, The Faint, Erase Errata and Bis. ADULT. have continued work on a slew of projects, notably their silent-experimental-short-horror film DECAMPMENT, the accompanying DECAMPMENT TRILOGY 7" series, and a 4 song EP entitled "Let's Feel Bad Together,” all of which was released throughout 2008. They'll be playing a expectedly killer DJ set this evening for you. Expect everything. :: local support DJs :: DJ JIM MAGAS (aka MAGAS aka JAMES MARLON MAGAS aka "electronic warlord of Chicago's blown-out wasteland") In 1999, Jim Magas, with no knowledge or background in electronic music or its production set out to become a one-man force in electronic rock. Beginnings were shaky as Magas struggled to achieve the new sounds he was hearing in his brain. How could he make it more powerful? Magas began honing his new craft on the same stages that he once commanded as singer of LAKE OF DRACULA and COUCH. MAGAS' raw charm attracted the attention of Detroit's ADULT, who released BAD BLOOD and FRIENDS FOREVER on their Ersatz Audio imprint. At Ersatz headquarters, MAGAS got a crash-course in analog synthesizers and production. With a new improved sound and a couple of records under his belt, Magas began performing across Europe and North America, playing clubs, festivals, squats, basements, lofts and the occasional Tastee Freez parking lot. In between, MAGAS worked on remixes for BOBBY CONN, LES GEORGES LENINGRAD, ARTHUR "Planet Rock" BAKER and RA-X, building up his Wizardlook studio piece-by-piece. By the time MAGAS was set adrift by the hiatus of ERSATZ AUDIO, he had already built his studio to a point where he and was able to respond with his most powerful and individualistic solo work to date: MAY I MEET MY ACCUSER. Magas had finally achieved a sound that he had been striving for. Three years later, now in full command of this heavy new sound, MAGAS returns with his most turbulent and concise solo work to date: VIOLENT ARP. All songs were recorded at Wizardlook and once again mastered by former LAKE OF DRACULA partner WEASEL WALTER, this mini-LP on Punch Records will shake you in a new kind of way. - DJ BEAU WANZER (aka "the man keeping it weird in Chicago") Also performing on the evening is our favorite Chicago scientist and yours, BEAU WANZER. Beau Wanzer makes music with the aid of drum machines and analog synthesizers. He's a collector of antique objects, rare media, and the absurd. Performing since 2002 in various dilapidated basements, he's not concerned with self-promotion, but more concerned with making music that evokes a raw and different element. For his first official & now classic single, 'Fuk You Klaxsons' (Nation Recs), it's all about doing something different and experimentation, but most importantly, not being classified into one type of sound. Mutating sound into another lifeform. With his solo works, Beau has a penchant for strange, yet undeniably infectious, sounds. His electronic music, amongst other things, has an odd ability to make you dance and lose control. Every so shrouded in anonymity, Beau also involves himself with side projects like GOLDEN BIRTHDAY (a local new-wave/art-rock group) and sometimes collaborates with Chicago’s ROLAN VEGA. Here, Beau brings his record repertoire to JACKSON for the first time in a DJ-ing capacity and we’re excited to see what he selects for the crowd. - DJ JORDAN Z. JORDAN Z's past and present parties and music based events have both inspired and continue to inspire the city's club veterans and nouveau scenesters alike. The music event he began to throw in the early 2000's brought new blood into the Windy's clubs. Dedicated to a no-holds-barred spirit he inherited from the eclectic radio programming in his hometown of Detroit, Jordan Z. has helped resurrect Chicago's reputation as a world-class dealer of dance music. One our favorite DJs, Jordan is the consummate DJ entertainer with great musical taste - expect only the best selections from this fella. _________________________________________________________________ Insert movie times and more without leaving Hotmail®. http://windowslive.com/Tutorial/Hotmail/QuickAdd?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Tutorial_QuickAdd_062009
