Oops, my bad (partially). I was listening to a high-quality VBR MP3, so later I grabbed the actual CD, threw it in the car CD player, and I've never heard such a difference. I still maintain that it's too loud and clips a bit, but I hereby upgrade my opinion from "terrible" to "recommended with reservations" and resolve to switch back to FLAC for my mobile music needs...
