Hi---my name is Matt Gonzales, and I've been signed up to the list for a few weeks, but have yet to post. What finally moved me to add my voice to the mix is my involvement with an experimental radio show that I'm collaborating on with a student at Ball State University in Muncie Indiana. I'm writing for the show and contributing to the program. As you can imagine, many of the artists we feature are rather obscure and thus hard to dig up information on, so I thought that perhaps some of you could point me to some useful resources, or even offer some insight/information of your own. The playlist I'm currently writing for includes songs by Stone Glass Steel, Time Being, Anti-Priest, Emetrics, Jim Fox, Chris Smith and Grand Mal. Much of it is dark ambient/sound collage stuff, and is rather new to me, as I am typically more a fan of more well-known IDM acts like u-ziq, hrvatski, fennesz, etc. If anybody has any input or advice on how to go about finding info on these artists, or has info of their own, I'd be much obliged. By the way, here's a link to the show's site: http://www.bsu.edu/web/ipr/programming/highlights.htm#soundex Thanks for any help you can give. --Matt __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Matthew, That great that you're working on a show for NPR. I am a huge supporter and listener of NPR. As for ambient artists, you should really think about Tim Hecker. He's an absolutely brilliant ambient artist and he will be performing at an electronic music festival I am curating called Decibel (Sept 23-26 in Seattle). Check out www.dbfestival.com for more info. If you are interested in info on Decibel or Tim Hecker, let me know. The festival will include a very broad scope of electronic music (techno, IDM, glitch, ambient, noise, drum and bass). Cheers, Sean Horton Decibel Festival Director/Curator Seattle, WA email: sean@dbfestival.com cell: 206.313.4627

So is it a show on NPR or a show on a single public radio station? I ask this becase reciently I spoke with a guy form NPR and he said there was nothing like this... Certainly, our frozen northern cousins have a fantastic national radio show called Brave New Waves which is on the CBC, and they play everything from insane hard to insane soft stuff... anyways, i you're looking for info- just do a google search.. I'm always surprised by what I find... JF/DS

I recommend Lull/scorn mastermind Mick Harris, and his home page is definitely worth checking out. He has put together so many projects over the years that I'm shocked he doesn't have a larger following. He is a definite master of the dark ambient genre, as well as isolationist and minimalist dub formats to name a few. Lull is a side project based on Industrial ambient reminiscent of the Eraserhead soundtrack, and many tracks go on for 15 minutes or more. He's also worked with John Zorn and Bill Laswell. His work is first class. For ambient I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Stars of the Lid. Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride are geniuses of the genre, having fallen into it through the old Austin shoegazer scene. Their last album, "Tired Sounds of..." is a masterpiece of the lullabye genre and gives Eno a run for his money. Check out the SOTL website. I took part in Aetherfest last year, and there were about 300 submissions covering the radio art genre from around the world. A lot of artists in that field can be found through Music Works magazine, and a great label featuring tweaked experimental field recordings (as well as electronica) is Soleilmoon. Alp is one of my favorites on that label as is Lusine ICL. Let me know how your research comes out. I and a friend named Alan were just exchanging e-mails this week about launching an annual experimental music festival on our college station in Pittsburgh. Alan has an awsome show called The Sonic Equivalent, and features an incredible cross-cut of experimental electronica genres and artists. I'll post for submissions if he gets the go ahead from the board. Any ideas? please e-mail me at charlesbenefiel@yahoo.com --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
