I recommend Lull/scorn mastermind Mick Harris, and his home page is definitely worth checking out. He has put together so many projects over the years that I'm shocked he doesn't have a larger following. He is a definite master of the dark ambient genre, as well as isolationist and minimalist dub formats to name a few. Lull is a side project based on Industrial ambient reminiscent of the Eraserhead soundtrack, and many tracks go on for 15 minutes or more. He's also worked with John Zorn and Bill Laswell. His work is first class.
For ambient I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Stars of the Lid. Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride are geniuses of the genre, having fallen into it through the old Austin shoegazer scene. Their last album, "Tired Sounds of..." is a masterpiece of the lullabye genre and gives Eno a run for his money. Check out the SOTL website.
I took part in Aetherfest last year, and there were about 300 submissions covering the radio art genre from around the world. A lot of artists in that field can be found through Music Works magazine, and a great label featuring tweaked experimental field recordings (as well as electronica) is Soleilmoon. Alp is one of my favorites on that label as is Lusine ICL.
Let me know how your research comes out. I and a friend named Alan were just exchanging e-mails this week about launching an annual experimental music festival on our college station in Pittsburgh. Alan has an awsome show called The Sonic Equivalent, and features an incredible cross-cut of experimental electronica genres and artists.
