Hello all. I'm wondering if any of you could enlighten me. I'm a fan of all forms of electronic music from Merzbow (ouch) to Paul Van Dyk. And thanks to this list, I'm finding out about a lot more artists. (Thanks!) Now, for my question. When talking to peeps about electronic music, the inevitable subject of genres comes up--classifying the music. Although I find genres restricting, I think it still helps to have a knowledge of the many and varied that there are. So, basically, I have trouble distinguishing between all the genres, whether they be dnb, house, jungle, trance, techno, idm, etc. etc. I listen to something and say 'now this is ------". But I'm never sure if I have the genre right. So I'm wondering if there are any websites or anything that would be useful in clarifying the different genres of electronic music. I hope I made my point. Thanks for your help. And forgive my ignorance. -chris. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! One problem is that this can be kind of subjective. Sometimes it goes to the level of a religious war. If you ever want to start a flame war on a rave list, just ask what the difference between jungle and drum&bass is. I was going to suggest Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music at http://ishkur.com/features/music but it seems like he's working on a revised version and took down the original. But I guess you can watch it and wait for the update. The old one was pretty good...though then again a lot of people thought it was crap, and it certainly wasn't objective. I think the best way to learn these sorts of things is to just listen to a lot of different stuff and pay attention to what people say about it. -- Tim Moore --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'd rather say 'from Merzbow to Paul Van Dyk (ouch)', heh. Anyway, http://www.allmusic.com is very helpful when educating oneself about genres. All of the tags aren't perhaps universally agreed, but it's a great starting point. Other than that, just listen to tons of music, both classics and the newest new, and it will become clearer and clearer what actually is the essence of a given genre. When the big bicture gets more comprehensible, and when you start to grasp the bewildering diversity out there, you'll probably notice that you don't actually like ALL forms of electronic music... .: visa tapani ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Smith" <hypno_paedia@yahoo.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, September 12, 2003 11:58 PM Subject: [idm] genres, subgenres, subsubgenres...

Hi, After some long nights of coding and designing, we now have the new forum up and running. As you will probably know, Overload is closing down in a couple of weeks and it's vital that we keep this resource running - its been vital for the UK and Europe, plus we are hoping some of you in the US of A and other far away lands will take us under your wing and offer us support. Please visit: http://www.littledetroit.net/forums/ And post up news/views and gigs, we'll be adding more sections this week - including Downloads, Links, Internet Radio and Live Chat. It's going to take some time to get the site to the standard Overload reached but we are hoping that with your help it wont take to long. Many thanks Martin Dust --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
