I'd rather say 'from Merzbow to Paul Van Dyk (ouch)', heh. Anyway, http://www.allmusic.com is very helpful when educating oneself about genres. All of the tags aren't perhaps universally agreed, but it's a great starting point. Other than that, just listen to tons of music, both classics and the newest new, and it will become clearer and clearer what actually is the essence of a given genre.
