Protools isn't the best thing for IDMish production. If you're recording a jazzband with a dozen mics simultaneously, and want to layer effects and everything in the mix, Protool's is for you. Don't the school computers have more than one kind of sequencer? Over where I'm at, (Chico State) we have our choice between ProTools, DigiPerformer, and Logic. I recommend Logic of the three. Personally I use Cubase, which with a good sampler (I use Battery), and effects (Reaktor), can make some crazy chh kkk brrbbr chhk music. Very nice. If you don't have money, I'd go the tracker rout, and get Buzz. Buzz is way less stable than its low cost competitor Fruity Loops, but it's completely free, has hundreds of synths and effects available for it, and its compatible with VST, and DX plugins. With additions to Buzz that allow you to do 24bit wavout recording, it's a very nice alternative. While its interface takes some getting used to (especially if you're used to the standard sequencer interface found in Logic, Cubase and the like) once you get it, it's quite efficient. And there's a great grunalar synth for it now. And don't feel bad for using buzz, many IDM aritists use it, most recently Jega, who's next album is rumored to have been written in Buzz (Mike P mentioned it on the Mu board months ago). Anyways, beat programming is relatively easy in both, but it's nice to have good samples. find a drumloop cut it up, and rearrange it. have the kick play 16th notes, change the pitch of the drums, add fx to miniscule parts. you can start to mimic vsnares in seconds, if you know where certain drum hits should go. and time signature fuckery is intuitive in both Cubase and Buzz. I'm a pro tools die hard and my latest project was done completely on Pro Tools. It's all a matter of how you use the program to achieve results. Logic is a fantastic piece of software but when it comes to cutting up audio Pro Tools is far superior. Granted some VST plugs can do stuttering effects and things of that sort very easily, but nothing beats the surgical precision of doing it all by hand. I barely use midi. All my songs are constructed from arranging audio on the grid and then slicing it all to shreds. And for that style of production, I think Pro Tools is a really solid platform. Give it a chance. so far this talk of pro tools not being right is utterly wrong. if you want to make cookie cutter soundscapes, then go for fruity loops or any of the other sequencers. I use pro tools and Logic, the stuff i make in pro tools is infinitely more interesting than my logic output. the reason for this is that with pro tools, especially with the new midi support, you have almost a physical sculpture relationship with the audio. you import audio tracks and use the plugins to shape them statically and realtime. you can work quickly and with extreme accuracy as the windows aren't mine shafts and the steps from original sample to manipulated sample are one two three, as opposed to logic which takes hours of directory saving and such. If you want to work strictly with midi plugs, then go with logic, cubase, fruity, etc.... the trackers are nice but i don't care for the work flow.(i use mac and pc) if you have tons of external gear(ie: not software plugs) then experiment with each. Logic is tight, cubase is just logic with different clothing, and fruity loops, while i like for simplicity, is a bit less dynamic than i like. I haven't too much experience with fl, but trying to put sounds a microsecond from the rather static slots you are given is a matter of delays and such, too much bs, when with logic you can just drag the sample/midi dot to wherever you like.with clock accuracy. anyway, best is to experiment for 'at least' a week with whatever bit of software you are considering, or have access to. fuck the faqs and tutorials, you'll learn much more by experimenting. yeah, too right...caught taking advice that i didn't give. i spent a few hours with fl and used the piano roll which i now realize does exactly what i just said couldn't be done. ah well... i still prefer external gear over everything but being broke and jobless doesn't buy equipment. someone wanta buy tracks? yeah, well.. indeed indeed people who dont know how to abuse fruity loops////dont have fun or make wicked shit with it.I like fruity loops alot....I dont write full tracks in fruity but do lots of automation and beat/synth - writing/mulching/destroying.Fruity goes really deep if you experiment with it.... as far as cubase being logic in different cloths is way off the mark....at least with cubase SX.I was die hard Logic till I found out about sx's capabilities in editing in the last couple weeks....switched over in a heart beat! If you want quick results, try messing around with Ableton Live (www.ableton.com). Superb if you want to make live music, but also extremely good when just creating songs.
