Recently I've read a few books on music and thought I'd share a few thoughts. Bass Culture by Lloyd Bradley I'm only part way throught this but I'm really enjoying it. Lots of interesting interviews and a good insite into the cultural reasons behind the development of Jamaican music. Techno Rebels by Dan Sicko I'm not sure if I didn't enjoy this book because it had a few too many nerdy trainspotter footnotes or because I read it while in the middle of Bass Culture. Either way I really didn't find this too interesting which is pretty strange since I'm into techno way more than anything else (there's a huuuuuge overlap between the music I like and that recommended at the end of the book). Last Night a DJ Saved my Life by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton Lots of interesting info on scenes that existed before I started listening to student radio. Hmmm... I read this ages ago so can't be bothered writing anything about it but I do remember enjoying it. So um, any comments on these two? All Music Guide to Electronica by a bunch of people State of Bass by Martin James (Jungle history) Dave ===== --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I won't comment on the All Music Guide b/c I had a lot to do with it, but State of Bass was a pretty good read: not spectacular, but very knowledgeable. Fortunately, it stayed away from the high-falutin' kind of audio dissemination that quickly becomes painful to read. Good discography too, broken down by era after every chapter. I remember being disappointed by the focus on later jungle instead of prime '92 hardcore, but there is quite a bit of history on how hardcore/jungle all came together (a bit like Dan Sicko breaking down the state of Detroit before Mojo/Cybotron). John NP: Panacea - Underground Superstardom --> great for reliving those heady hardcore days... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Get it. A good chunk of the reviews/discographies are actually written by John Bush who's a member of this list (or used to be anyway). Covers a lot of ground, most of which you'll probably find relevant. Even mentions non-electronica acts such as Godspeed You Black Emperor! My only problem with it is that many of the reviews are a bit too glowing. The guys who wrote it obviously love the music, but I would have prefered the reviews to be a bit more critical. While we're on the subject of books, I'm in the middle of reading Jeff Noon's lastest Needle In The Groove. Deserves a mention on this list not only because he gives credit to Pole, Plastikman and Sonic Youth Research, but I think quite a lot of people find it interesting. Takes a new slant on the cut-up technique by 'remixing' previous chapters. Also funny are some of the place names in his version of Manchester, State 808 Place being one that springs to mind :-) Glenn --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Just finished Needle in the Groove - an excellent read for new ideas of remix methods - and cool background reading on the early punk days of Manchester - makes me want to dig out my 10 inch vinyl copy of "Short Circuit-Live at the Electric Curuis" - for some pre-Joy Division and early Fall jams. .. .... stephen http://www.digitalcutuplounge.com Glenn McClements wrote:

I wouldn't really bother buying AMG's published material. You can find the majority of the reviews on the web, which makes up the bulk of the book. Not that their reviews are extremely insightful or helpful, either. The bulk of the book is the reviews, not actual commentary or articles on electronic music. Additionally, although their categorization of musical styles and subsequent definitions are mildly interesting, they don't provide much actual knowledge about what it exactly is you're looking for. About the only things I found worthwhile in this book were the musical timelines and essays at the end, which comprised about 30 pages of an otherwise massive tome. There are better books on electronic music history and culture, if you put in the time to find them whether it be on amazon's homepage or at your local library. Isn't that the problem with all A-Z record guides though? You've got to know what you're looking for if you want to find it... Woh. I just blew my own mind. if you're in the nyc/brooklyn area... i'll be playing indiepop and electronica at enid's on sunday, june 9th around 10pm. please come out and enjoy a few relaxing drinks while listening to me force my musical tastes on all the williamsburg hipsters! enid's is located at 560 Manhattan Avenue (at Driggs) in Brooklyn. take the L train to the bedford stop, walk with the traffic on bedford until you reach a park on the right. cut through the park to the opposite corner and walk straight down driggs about 2-3 blocks. enid's is on the corner of manhattan and driggs. say hi if you come! - roy brasilia http://www.unovis.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? This book suffers from the same prejudices as a lot of other writing on D&B from the same period (e.g Simon Reynolds). It is extremely critical of the Bukem/Fabio more melodic strand whilst championing the tech-step stuff by the No U-turn crew & others. Of course the truth is somewhere in between. There was an equal amount of shite in both strands of the music. And classics from both camps as well. What happened to D&B is an object lesson in how the music press can skew the development of a musical scene and what influence they have on a fickle public. Once they started championing Speed (Bukem & Fabio's club) in summer 95 the queues grew longer and longer outside. By 96, however, the backlash started and by the end of that year the club was almost dead - I remember seeing Fabio, Grooverider and Peshay playing to an audience of about 25. The prominence of techstep which took over as the darling of the music press caused a desolate 2 years for D&B. Only over the last 2 years has the scene recovered - the main reason being is that all sides of the music are equally represented. Anyway, the book suffers by not taking a balanced view and the same goes for the 'Rough Guide to Drum and Bass' book as well. *********************************************************************************** http://www.itnetplc.com Any opinions expressed in this email are those of the individual and not necessarily those of ITNET plc and/or its subsidiaries.
