Thank you for the positive input. You're making some very good points. I will have to watch that. Guess I'm just a tad confused about how to get people's attention at the moment. I've already done the non-egotistical, passive, shy, neglected artist thing and all it's ever gotten me was neglected. Whether or not you are doing something unique, people seem more and more respectful of arrogance as time goes by so I figured I should start coming across that way a bit. It's hard. I'm trying to break through a wall of elitist, Autechre clone idealists to show that I'm doing something different. I'm so tired of being ignored that I'm even willing to come off arrogant if that's what it takes to get people's attention. Dean, This is politics, one person will want you to be confident, another will want their artist to be a hidden push over. Most, I think, would like you to _not_ be accessible to the "common" public- like being on this list. Heaven forbid you would be a normal person whom they could grow to understand, see mistakes and faults in or learn more about... People want to "read about you" and have that carrot of "understanding you" dangle in front of them, but be ever elusive. That's what popularity is all about... It's frigin hard. And I can't tell you what's the best way to get out there. Think: "Public Relations" It's all PR at your stage, PR, PR, PR ,PR.. sing it in your sleep, dream it... magazine reviews, live sets, marketing, label backing,... make the connects... and personally, I think, be confident, but not arrogant. but then again, you could be arrogant, or a pussy cat too... it really doesn't matter! THE MUSIC DOES!!!!!!!!! If it's any consolation, I think what I heard rocks! Really! Play live in my area [SF] and I will be your groupie! =) So there, see we aren't all Ae drones. I'll also add, as someone who just recently sent out an e-mail to friends to check out some music I've been working as well, that while it's perfectly natural to not get a single response until quite a while after the post, it's always frustrating because you're always at that moment where you've practically fallen in love with and obsessed over this song you just finished. And to not get an immediate, lavishly positive response from this entire world of e-mail addresses seems like a slap in the face. When in fact, these folks you e-mailed are probably just getting off their shift at work.. or just didn't have time to check e-mail, or have a broken net connection, or ran out of download disk space, or just don't have the time to download but mean to, etc. etc. etc. Just hang in there. ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> ======================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

We are all so interested in your killfile super powers eric. It is a pity you have killfiled this, as the mp3s of Dean's music which I have downloaded so far are excellent, and much more interesting than Dean's PR awkwardness. I will be ordering the album. Heh, anybody who says that needing attention justifies their obnoxiousness is pretty much an instant writeoff for me. Not that it can't result in fine, fine music, but I know that the entirety of my music collection is composed of artists who didn't beg me to listen to their music and tell them what I thought of it. -eric --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well no, I don't think it does, if this thread is still coming from the standpoint of the reasons someone might listen to a piece of music that bears no previous connection to the listener other than their being asked by a stranger to listen to a random piece because the listener *might* like it. I mean, it's possible that someone has gone on to a fruitful music career via that path, but does anybody respond positively to begging like that? Of course, this is not to overgeneralize "begging" into an argument for the eradication of the homeless or anything. -eric --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Not sure if you are aware of this Anig, but yesterday you sent me a virus. It was a reply to my recordcamp announcement and the attachment was called "you are fat" or something like that. I believe it was a worm. I think you're overstating the point a bit. If the guy promotes his music on an IDM list, saying that he thinks IDM people will be interested, you can guess *something* about what sort of music it is. I mean I asked people to give me feedback on my tunes, and lots of people responded with criticism. I mean, it's exactly the sort of thing mailing lists make possible, no? At bottom, it's not that different from an advert for a new artist, seems to me. Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
