I think you're overstating the point a bit. If the guy promotes his music on
an IDM list, saying that he thinks IDM people will be interested, you can
guess *something* about what sort of music it is. I mean I asked people to
give me feedback on my tunes, and lots of people responded with criticism. I
mean, it's exactly the sort of thing mailing lists make possible, no? At
bottom, it's not that different from an advert for a new artist, seems to
me.
