Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a recent increase of albums where the album art seems to accurately visually reflect the "sound" of the music contained within, in one way or another? For example, I just got my copy of Colingib's "Special Rumble" [thanks, kracfive!], and I can't help noticing that, to me, the cover (grassy, mossy, entangled rotting-looking green w/old wood & rusty metal + soothing expanse of white) pretty much seems to be what the music sounds like. Other examples, for me, would be: Lipswitch (R. Devine) - excellent cover art for the album. Looks like it sounds. Muddlin Gear (J. Lidell) - again, the chopped up new-orleans-looking black-and-white cover is just what it sounds like to me. anything by Boards of Canada - obvious. Slow Motion Process (Gimmik) - crystal, etherial, although the art is more random than the music, it still works. Confield (ae) - um, yeah. Aurora (merck comp) - I just think the close-up and smoothness of the car works somehow. OK, so that's not a lot of examples, but they're what I'm thinking of at the moment. And I know album art can be a lot of different things - commentary, juxtaposition, whatever. I'm not here to put anything down, just commenting on how cool it is sometimes when the album art seems so closely connected to the sound of the music, like if the music were a painting or a drawing or a photograph, this is what it would look like... Comments? Flames? Ignoring? -Lord High Damek, Ambassador of Love __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I've always thought that the best album covers fit the music, but I also think that seeing the album cover before hearing any of the music can influence the way you perceive the music, especially if you're just really sensitive to colors and images. A few album covers that really affected the way I listened to a few cds: Polygon Window: Surfing on Sine Waves, autechre: Amber, autechre: confield, ?-ziq: In Pine Effect, Plaid: Not For Threes. There are others, but those examples affected me so strongly that when I listen to those cds, I sort of still have the artwork in mind the whole time. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? i am looking at Monolake, Gravity and Sutekh, periods make sense album covers. Minimalism in all its glory. Fucking rad. Sutekh cover is green on one side and orange on the other, soothing and Rothko-esque. mmmmmm.

That's the ideal of good design. There was quite an interesting article in Sound on Sound last year about that, though it obviously had a bit of a mainstream slant. Search on 'sleeve design' or something at www.sound-on-sound.com. Now I want to look at (as well as listen to) all those albums you mentioned, my IDM collection is pretty small. The first thing I ever got was 'Ciccli Suite' from Ae which fits your theory perfectly :-) Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? As far as album art describes the enclosed music the most adaquately goes, I would have to say Autechre have had the best art, behind them comes Aphex(mostly the later covers, I'll never be able to see his visage again without being assualted by LSD memories), BoC, Phonem's(Hydro Electric at least) and Amon Tobins. Go buy Phonem's Hydro Electric.!!! On Thu, 14 Jun 2001, Anig Browl wrote:

Chiastic Slide/Envane and EP7 fit the visual bill perfectly for me when it comes to Ae stuff. Don't forget Jega's two albums. Cover art for both are excellent and fit well, Geometry being the more appropriate of the two. oh, and how about Max Tundra's Some Best Friend You Turned Out to Be for an appropriate cover. That's one of my favorites. -mark --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

dylan (jega) designed both albums, he's also pursuin' a 3-d design and animation career.. I loved the richie devine tdr analog art cover. (very appropiate...indeed. what about the otto van schirach 8000 robot design...sick huh?? my favorites are still by far the rephlex albums, they just don't give a fuck about the eye-candy....it's all about sound...hehe otomi.

Yeah this is often the case... take "Sense's Fourier Transformations EP comes in a sleek jewel case with blurred classical iconic artwork" former IDM list member Rowland Atkinson's description of artwork/packaging and then Pietro Da Sacco (without having seen the finished artwork as he had a promo cdr) description of the music "Shiny metallic rhythms pulsate around casually placed percussive elements, bubbly melodies are conjoined with an atmospheric vibe, and it all flows into one stream of silent, classical, and warm electronic music.". To my way of thinking Pietro's review of the music also describes the great artwork by Antii Jadertpolm very well if you replace sound descriptors with visual descriptors.
