There's a lot of fuss made a bout the relationship between hiphop and IDM, but what of dancehall reggae? No, really I'm being serious. Tracks like "Wilmot (Red Snapper remix)" by Sabres of Paradise owe a lot to dancehall. Hiphop and dancehall are pretty closely related except dancehall is perhaps more melodic and a lot more stripped down. Also it has that wonderful lop-sided beat which just makes me itch all over. I remember hearing my first dancehall reggae back in '97 which, for me, was the best period. Artists like Red Rat, Beenie Man, Buccaneer, Buju Banton...sheer class! It seems to me that an IDM/dancehall fusion would work very well and I'm curious: does anyone here know of any dancehall reggae- (and I don't mean dub) influenced IDM out there? Apart from "Wilmot" I can't think of any. Cheers for any leads, G-love. http://www.gram.org.uk _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? have a look at the on-u sound catalogue. wilmot isnt dancehall by any stretch of the jamaican imagination. everything that weatherall/snapper did was influenced by adrian sherwood.. wilmott at best (dont get me wrong - have the record & spinned in a club 2 weeks ago) is dub. for the real deal on dub try augustus pablo or king tubby. or for a dancehall/idm fusion - that missy elliott 'freakin' isnt too far... Oh yes absolutely I've been wondering if anyone else noticed this, In the US, especially NYC there's a huge feeding ground between hiphop and dancehall - witness Shyne (P.diddy's bitch) w/ Barrington Levys "Whooooaaaa Ehhhh!" Go back to early breakbeats, mostly the proto-jungle stuff and its loaded with 80s Dancehall samples, also many modern digi-riddims as instrumentals would easily pass as IDM with a little bit of DSP tweakery. Riddims like Grass Cyart, Streetsweeper, Medina (one of my favs) I'd love to see someone like Sean Paul or Mr Vegas do a track with someone like Push Button Objects or Phonecia etc might not work, but might work really well! For an excellent site on riddims check out: http://www.reggae-riddims.com/ Or the amazing JamRid site: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/2597/ - Its "Interactive"! -i --- Medium Graham <medium_graham@yahoo.co.uk> wrote:
