i'd never seen Autechre play live before so i decided to go see them last night at The Fridge in Brixton, London. so, where to start? the support dj's - Rob Hall and Russell Haswell. i'm not sure who was who, but to be quite honest whoever played before Team Doyobi and then inbetween Team Doyobi and Ae pretty much sucked. he played some painfully intense scream-core thrash metal, some mid-90's style acid house, some techno (i recognised a coupla tracks from Surgeon's "Pet 2000" ep), and i think a bit of idm/electronic type stuff. the 'mixing', and i use the term loosely, was woeful. technically appalling. i assume this was deliberate, that the 'point' is that there's no point and no feeling. i think Team Doyobi played for 45 mins or so. i kinda enjoyed their set, and heard enough to convince me to give their Skam ep another listen next time i see it in a store. their style seems to be that they get into a groove for 30 to 45 seconds, with some amazing crunchy hip-hop/electro beats, deep reverberating bass and nice abstract effects, but then in an instant completely toss it all away and go off on a tangent of random electronic glitches, squeals and squelches. Autechre... the first track they played was pretty cool, but from there on they went into electronic-squall territory, layers and layers of indescribable sound, which really isn't my cup of tea at all. frankly, i've found much of their recent material quite patchy - some of it is incredibly funky, emotional and soulful, but much of it is just far too clever by half and leaves me cold. the production skills and attention to detail i can appreciate, but where's the soul/funk/emotion? last night's set lacked all 3. to sum the evening up - it's all good, even when it isn't good. rob _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the placidity of the crowd deserved this kind of treatment. i think the irregularity of the dj sets led up to the insanity of autechre's perfectly.

was very odd. the second track in particular built strongly, with intense layered structures. very strong impression that they weren't playing back sequences, but playing with the structures themselves. very exciting stuff. as the gig went on it got stranger and stranger, random elements taking over until by the end my head had submitted to complete disarray. the few punk rockers hanging around seemed the most in-place people there. judging by the tempo, it was dance music, and dancing to it was pretty amazing in itself, dancing 4:4 with random beats flying around you. but being london most people were shoe gazing or idol worshiping.

i don't agree with that... i don't think for one second that his (Russell Haswell's) set was a reaction to the crowd. my understanding is that he always plays that way - ie, a bunch of hard/intense records mixed, well, shall we say in a rather relaxed unconventional style.
quoted 3 lines i think the>i think the >irregularity of the dj sets led up to the insanity of autechre's >perfectly.
i think you're spot-on there! it's like after Team Doyobi finished the whole evening was designed to be as intense, mindblowing and extreme as possible.
quoted 3 lines judging by the tempo, it was dance music, and dancing to it was pretty>judging by the tempo, it was dance music, and dancing to it was pretty >amazing in itself, dancing 4:4 with random beats flying around you. but >being london most people were shoe gazing or idol worshiping.
i really couldn't describe last night's set as 'dance' music. 'dance' isn't just about tempo, it's about funk and a whole bunch of other things, but funk especially, and last night didn't cut it for me on that level. mind, more power to you if you feel different (as you evidently do!) and you were able to dance to it. i just stood still, trying (and failing) to take it all in.

heh, i think that's the first time i've been described as something other than a miserable cynical bastard. ;) later rob np: trying to get my head straight with the luverly Project Unison on Neo Ouija. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

thinking in the shower this morning (the best kind). autechre are ok. irritating, but ok. serving the increasingly unpalatable to an endlessly ravenous crowd. the new progression of conscious antistructure creates equally scattered confusion of how to take it. one guy at ATP blagged to his friend 'the more random it is, the more i laaarrrvvv it..' his outstretched arms spiked the air, while another stroked his chin in fear. it makes you question whether the senses come from the brain or from the heart? autechre know the answer's both as they create a soup of modern feeling stirred of sensations that our brains produce in a joyful acceptance of randomness and our hearts produce in a natural rejection of arrhythmia. for many it means being rooted to the spot in catatonia. for others, the dominant organ rules and they either dance like a spaz, or flee. autechre are ok for playing with these limitations of our flesh. as we become accepting and tolerant, they crank the intensity. brain goes one way, heart goes the other. the music challenges, just like it should.. but with no warning, this experience is being swallowed as unwittingly as a spiked drink.. np. something good for me: Boredoms - Vision Creation New Sun --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Wow, thanks Matt so much for clearing this up. For the last few years I actually believed that I was enjoying Autechre's music. Now I know that I was just being fooled all along and it's completely cerebral. Go figure. Could you possibly clarify my other tastes in music for me? Waiting to be enlightened, -The Tin Man

Funny, I read the post as a thumbs up for Autechre (of the "it hurts so good" variety). -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

it was - if you see my suggestions hinting at possible insidious musical terrorism and conscious mind manipulation of their (slightly predictable?) audience as a good thing.. which of course i do.. . a fresh move from the la-la melody days.. and if i happened to spread a bit of paranoia myself, causing some serious internal questioning of 'what those feelings *really* were when i heard them live' amongst the headz.. then that's even more fun.. and of course it's all head in the clouds postulating.. but take from it what you will. . --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
