Saw jim o'rouke w/sonic youth opening for pearl jam saturday in tampa, missed the show they did in orlando, cant remember the name alias it was under, but needless to say the sonic youth set was good. they only did about 5 songs, the show was really a pearl jam freak out, but the stuff sonic youth did w/o'rouke was good, stuff he did was mix in some live sampling of kim gordans voice among other things, that she sung into. the crowd was there for pearl jam not sonic youth so i left wanting more sonic youth, should have gone to orlando. anyways if you get the chance check out the stuff jim o'rouke is doing with sonic youth its good, and the stuff under the alias is sopposed to be more experimental and from what people are saying great. and thanks to everyone who replyed about the dr660, i passed on it, but just got cubase which seems extremly powerful and much more in line for what i want to do. -scott --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Are there any recordings of sonic youth doing the live sampling? It's something I'm particularly interested in doing at some point..... Anyone else here doing live sampling type stuff? I saw this show in SF and, thankfully, no pearl jam in sight...Best show I've seen in a long damned time. The highlights for me included the sampling work by O'Rourke (as well as his wall of sound guitar playing) and thurston's experimental stuff (playing guitar with drumsticks <is this new?>, dragging the guitar head across the floor for some excellent feedback, etc.) For anyone who's seen them live before (okay, so I'm new to SY), are these new techniques or is this old hat for thurston? I left the show feeling like THIS is what I always expected MBV to be like. It was that good. Sure, there was the typical new york city rock 'n' roll show, but the addition of O'Rourke gives them an added dimension and, I think, extra incentive to experiment live. Great show. Does anyone have recommendations for some of their more experimental stuff? ---brian ------------------------ Brian W. My roommate has a videotape where Thurston whips out a baseball bat while playing "100%" on David Letterman. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Anything on their Sonic Youth Records label.... I have 2--Slappkamers Met Slagroom is 2 intense industrial noise jams with trademark SY guitar strumming and one sweet weird Kim Gordon vocal track, "10 out of 10, man!" Just dragged out the joint effort with Jim O'Rourke Invito Al Cielo for another listen yesterday, 50 minutes of stringy droning, the last track is nice and buildy for 29 minutes. Gotta get the other three releases on here. Solostuff from Lee R. on diverse labels such as the reissue on Drunken Fish of "inscriptions", and that great cd on Barooni which been released only a couple of weeks ago. Thurston Moore had soloefforts as well as contributions to hundreds of labels, giving these labels a chance and focussing more on "experiment" and tonal ladders. This being Idm, i would like to point out that their Ciccone Youth "Whitey album" had great "dancetracks" on it. "Macbeth" for instance is a favourite of mine. Even so... Most of the experimental side of Sy could be classified under "ambient". do also check out early works from Glenn Branca which features guitarplay from some members of Sy, (as well as Band of Susans, Swans etc...) You could go on and on about SY... Me personally, i think you can put them on the same line as Velvet Underground, Beatles, Beach Boys and other legendary bands. There's one difference: they try to keep up with their roots (aka punkrockfeeling) and live up to that in a certain way which only deserves respect. History will show what impact they had on guitar, expermental and contemporary music. j --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
