These are all old tricks for Thurston. I saw him doing this stuff well over 10 years ago. But I'm sure its just as cool sounding now. And for fun mixing of threads .. last time I saw them Sonic Youth were opening for Public Enemy m. -----Original Message----- From: Gause, Brian [mailto:bgause@SECTORBASE.COM] Sent: Monday, August 14, 2000 10:39 AM To: 'idm@hyperreal.org' Subject: RE: [idm] jim o'rouke and sonic youth I saw this show in SF and, thankfully, no pearl jam in sight...Best show I've seen in a long damned time. The highlights for me included the sampling work by O'Rourke (as well as his wall of sound guitar playing) and thurston's experimental stuff (playing guitar with drumsticks <is this new?>, dragging the guitar head across the floor for some excellent feedback, etc.) For anyone who's seen them live before (okay, so I'm new to SY), are these new techniques or is this old hat for thurston? I left the show feeling like THIS is what I always expected MBV to be like. It was that good. Sure, there was the typical new york city rock 'n' roll show, but the addition of O'Rourke gives them an added dimension and, I think, extra incentive to experiment live. Great show. Does anyone have recommendations for some of their more experimental stuff? ---brian ------------------------ Brian W.
