I strongly recommend: Ersatz Audio releases (Le Car etc.), Dopplereffekt (Voice activated etc.), LFO, Anthony Rother (his recent release was allreade discussed here I think!?), AUX88, I-F, Imperial Brothers, Sem, Hashim, Lockstep etc. ...almost "classic" style material. (Wouldn´t "harsh" anyone I think! And I think I´ll have to check on that scopex record soon ;)) Otherwise this is so common material that I think you allready might have releases of all of the above.... and i strongly recommend you look for hexstatic 'vector' ep on vinyl - out last week on ninja tune... which is back to the old skool electro - with 2 copies you can even mix in the weird ninja movie samples buried on the b side.... of course i would say that... that's new - and i strongly recommend Hashim - Al Nayfish - that ALWAYS rocks the crowd - even tho its almost 15 years old. Juan Atkins aka Cybotron on fantasy, but god knows (or probably someone on this list can help) where you'll find that one on 12" - I'll try and dig out the details for you... hip hop electro or just electro??? w^:^)

Other people would be better at recommending new stuff than me, but I'd really recommend the obvious Detroit people: Ectomorph, Aux 88, Keith Tucker, Drexciya. Beyond that I like to mix it up with stuff from the old school -- Kraftwerk "Numbers", "Tour De France" are obvious choices, but I also have a bunch of 80's pop that is basically done with an electro beat. I like a lot of Human League songs, and Gary Numan stuff. Then there was the whole period where Hip Hop was based around electro beats -- Africa Bambaata again is obvious, but there are dope tracks by Kurtis Blow, Stetsasonic, Run DMC ('My Adidas' yo), and even people like Whodini and the Time. And speaking of the Time, there are really cool Prince tracks from back in the day...and AGAIN speaking of the time, early Janet Jackson tracks produced by Jimmy Jam&Terry Lewis. THEN we have to talk about Miami Bass tracks ... and there's loads of those -- I picked up a bunch at the Goodwill of obscure Miami Bass records. My favorite is a track entitled 'Daddy Long Stroke.' And don't forgive 2 Live Crew ... as if you ever could. That may sound kind of cheesy. But as much as I love it, with Electro, the knife and the warm block of velveeta are never that far away. You have to flirt with being cheesy in an Electro set in order for it to be fun. An added benefit is that these are tracks that people actually heard before on the radio, maybe when they were really young, and that can really hook a crowd. At some point I'm going to have to put up real audio of an old school set by my friend DJ Miche' who's been DJing since way back in the day in New Orleans. There's loads of shit NO ONE on these mailing lists have ever heard that is positively bumpin. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net On Tue, 27 Jun 2000, Chris Frey wrote:

you'd be surprised. it all depends on the crowd, but i've played the scopex record out and didn't clear the floor. you don't have to dig back 15 years to find great electro. . other records to check out. . dopplereffekt album on hell's gigolo label. . - tons of dope tracks, if you can't find a track on here that moves the crowd, frighten them off with 'plasiphilia' . . . i w-w-want to fu-fu-fuck a ma-mane-mannequin, mannequin, mannequin. . anthony rother - red light district, sex with the machines, don't stop the beat, simul. . . on Elektrolux, and PSI49NET - tight, cleanly produced electro from one it's best artists. a good balance between old and new, and guaranteed to rock a floor. silicon scally - electrocide 2x12 on scsi voice stealer - all electric house 2x12 on subvert il. ek. tro - il. ek . tro vol. 1 and 2 on klang elektronik - all carl finlow projects. . some of the best shit out there. the ss release is darker, a little more minimal, and less floor-friendly, but definitely playable. . the voice stealer can't clear a floor, and the il. ek. tro is one the best records *ever*. . all perfect examples of the recent electro, sans cheese. . the il.ek.tro record is great to mix with, all 4 tracks are more than playable. its daz quayle (who runs scsi, the best dark electro label out there) and finlow together. . i-f - theme from pack, space invaders are smoking grass, playstation #1, fucking consumer, etc. . on Interdimensional Transmissions, and Disko B - one of the pioneers of the dutch sound. . the first three 12s are necessary to move the crowd, straight up analog shit. . if you want to get darker, and need something to mix with the scopex record, check the 2x12 on Interdimensional Transmissions for (i think) 'rage of aquarius'. the 2x12 has most of the other tracks also, so you can save some money instead of buying the singles. . that simulant 12 on scopex - you already have it, use it. . mixes well with everything from richie devine's 12 on schematic and Phoenecia's 12 on schematic (also very floor friendly without the obvious cheese), to the Wild Planet 2x12 on 430 West or Drexciya, to the Decal record on Trama Industries. . anything on the Clone / Viewlexx / Murdercapital labels. . - the dutch group of labels. . minimal, analog electro. . pick up the new Cosmic Force 12. tons more. . even with leaving out all of the Detroit shit. check www.submerge.com for .ra and mail order. le syndicat electronique on invasion planete. . - dope, analog electro similar to dopplereffekt, i-f, or even adult transparent sound on solid groove, abstrakt dance, etc. . - four guys from the UK, recording all of their tracks *LIVE*, making some sick electro. . also mixes well with the Scopex record, and alot of Detroit records. . try it with any of Kieth Tucker's material. . mr velcro fastener on i220 dj assault on electro-funk, assault rifle - fuck the club up with XXX vocals. made to move people. frost jockey vol 2 on planet mu - sick, harsh electro airlocktronics on airlock autechre! - you can mix a ton of autechre tracks with electro with a good result. good to start off with. . same with Musik Aus Strom releases. . -Jeffrey Cohen --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The new Chromatix 12" on Spelunk is THE shit, upbeat and funky but with an experimental edge. Anthony Rother 's "Simulationszeitalter" LP is excellent as well as the Perspects "Desire and Efficiency" 12" on Ersatz Audio. Also, keep an eye out for any Carl Finlow projects - Random Factor, IlEkTro, Silicon Scally - as they contain a good few floor fillers. i dono, use artistic liscense. isn't autechre electro? ;) and most electro people like harsh, but not noise, afaik. or is the requirement that it has to have a 303? use analogue bubblebath or something. then all the aphexspotters at the venue will trip. or just use the records over again, making really LOOOONG mixes ;) actually i don't have much advice at all. hrm. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Do you really let others decide what you're goin to play? I reckon the records you do have and buy, are the ones you really like, play those!(wether they're electro or not.) If you want to get some okay electro really fast nevertheless, I recommend buying comps as the Electro Boogies on Studio K7 or the Streetsounds Electro series. You can also try to find some old stuff by Egyptian Lover, Techno Hop records or Newcleus, it's worth the search! good luck, Olaf (....and I wouldn't recommend Anthony Rother, he's faking the funk IMHO)

No - I would have to disagree with that. I also play out and it is necessary to conform to the tone of the gig and if - as the original poster - you have been "ASKED" to play an electro set, then that's what the promoter/ organiser wants you to play. As the hired DJ, that's what's you're expected to deliver. You are there to do a job, no to have a public wank. If, on the other hand, someone hears you play a freestyle set and on the basis of that asks you to do their party, by all means, indulge yourself. Afterall, you are free to play the records you 'really like' in your bedroom any time you choose. Oh, and on the electro recommendations query, I'd say pop on some of Luke Slater's recent Wireless album. Good luck for the gig!
