Other people would be better at recommending new stuff than me, but I'd really recommend the obvious Detroit people: Ectomorph, Aux 88, Keith Tucker, Drexciya. Beyond that I like to mix it up with stuff from the old school -- Kraftwerk "Numbers", "Tour De France" are obvious choices, but I also have a bunch of 80's pop that is basically done with an electro beat. I like a lot of Human League songs, and Gary Numan stuff. Then there was the whole period where Hip Hop was based around electro beats -- Africa Bambaata again is obvious, but there are dope tracks by Kurtis Blow, Stetsasonic, Run DMC ('My Adidas' yo), and even people like Whodini and the Time. And speaking of the Time, there are really cool Prince tracks from back in the day...and AGAIN speaking of the time, early Janet Jackson tracks produced by Jimmy Jam&Terry Lewis. THEN we have to talk about Miami Bass tracks ... and there's loads of those -- I picked up a bunch at the Goodwill of obscure Miami Bass records. My favorite is a track entitled 'Daddy Long Stroke.' And don't forgive 2 Live Crew ... as if you ever could. That may sound kind of cheesy. But as much as I love it, with Electro, the knife and the warm block of velveeta are never that far away. You have to flirt with being cheesy in an Electro set in order for it to be fun. An added benefit is that these are tracks that people actually heard before on the radio, maybe when they were really young, and that can really hook a crowd. At some point I'm going to have to put up real audio of an old school set by my friend DJ Miche' who's been DJing since way back in the day in New Orleans. There's loads of shit NO ONE on these mailing lists have ever heard that is positively bumpin. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net On Tue, 27 Jun 2000, Chris Frey wrote:
