Oh, this one gets the dipshit award for today. I don't know what's more pathetic: a person writing for a small zine in the UK begging for review material or a hack living in the biggest music-industry state writing for a graphic-ass-beautiful US magazine begging like a gimp for freebees from, admit it, the small-ass labelheads watching these lists. Give me a fucking break. Actually, maybe I'm the most pathetic, because I write reviews for Rolling Stone and I shouldn't stoop to this crass level. Go bug Alison at Astralwerks or Susan at Nothing, freakshow, and stop this worthless waste of bandwidth. The Dark Swan

Oh come on, it's fun sending your 12"s to music mags that are never gonna review them. I just haven't sent in ours to Rolling Stone because I know that they won't even think to review it, whereas magazines like Urb, I would think we stood a chance... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, I'm really fucking sorry to have inconvenienced you, 'Dark Swan' (woooh!). First off, I wasn't 'begging' for material, I was inviting it. Secondly, XFade ain't a "small zine" any more than Rolling Stone is - both come from major publishing houses and are distributed through the newstrade, so what's the difference? Thirdly, what the hell is a "small-ass labelhead"? If techno were left to the "big-ass" labels, it'd die: the best stuff always comes from the small labels, full stop. What's more, if techno were left to mags like Rolling Stone it'd suffer a similar fate. So what's the problem? To the chap who asked if XFade was a new magazine, yes it is - it started in September. However I incorrectly stated that it was a sister mag to DJ, when in fact I should have said Future Music. Glad to see you're "really fucking sorry" instead of just "sorry." Relishing the pleasure that gave me. Begging v. inviting. Either way, it's still journalistic laziness. Do your "inviting" off-list. And oh, I know, it's SO hard to ask for email addys and do a little bit of fingerwork gathering info instead of an annoying blanket email. XFade v. Rolling Stone. Difference? Although your logic is indubitable, it's called "a few million more issues," natch. Oh, and I have nothing against small labels; rather like them, truth be told, as well as small magazines. I do, however, dislike writers who take their music-gathering public...about as much as the list dislikes my special flavor of posting. Tell you what: I'll stop the bitter words if you'll stop the laziness. The Dark Swan

so uh, i was just curious as to what exactly was the reviewing selection process at rolling stone. i suppose you must be reading all of the underground press, buying shit from unknown artists on your record shop trip, so as to keep in touch with the street, right? you must be in constant communication with the illuminati of idm & glitchtronix? you guys must be digging through piles of new, hip releases from carpet bomb, pitchcadet, schematic, reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge, sonic therapy... anything less would just be lazy, man. la la, mine's a bitter too, if you please. ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Journalistic laziness? It's nothing of the sort. The fact of the matter is that there are hundreds of small labels out there who can't get a look in when it comes to the music press (for a multitude of reasons) who are desperate to find sympathetic journalists and publications. Five years publishing Magic Feet, the only magazine that created a level playing field in its reviews section, taught me this. What's more, the private mails I've had since I posted the message indicate that plenty of labels were very glad for the opportunity to send their music to someone who will actually listen to it and try and get it some coverage. Labels on tight budgets need to know that whoever they're sending review material to will at least try and do something with it: it's no good just sending stuff to a magazine's main office and hoping that it'll reach the right writer, which, nine times out of ten, it won't. And for your information, I have done a little fingerwork in my time, which is why I have a database of nearly a thousand contacts in the techno sphere. Posting the info to the list was simply a handy way of reaching a few more people I hadn't previously had any contact with. Why on earth would anyone have a problem with journalists who "take their music-gathering public"? Ah, Mr. Swan is probably just jealous 'cause none of the really cool labels will send him stuff to review in Rolling Stone. On that note - I write reviews for a couple different mags, and have a radio show, too! Yes, that's right, I'm a double whammy promo whore! So all you labels, send me your stuff! Check the Feedback Monitor website (URL is in my sig file below) for my "credentials". I won't post my address and phone number to the list, 'cause that's just asking for trouble - but if you've got something to hype, get in touch off-list. That way I'll actually have to do a little work and reply to you with my address, so The Dark Swan can't accuse me of being lazy. this desperation is caused by the high price of admission to the promo model of label business. this is supported by reviewers and magazines who create a stereotype of themselves writing only about music that they get for free. eric --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

And what exactly is wrong with only (or, in my case, mainly) writing about music that they get for free? Most reviewers are generally given a finite number of slots to fill on the review pages each month. If I'm asked to write 10 reviews, I'll go to the stack of promos first and if I find 10 discs that deserve the press, I will write about them. If I come up short, I'll turn to recent purchases to fill the gap. Why? Well, those labels that sent me discs for free did so for a reason - to get them reviewed. They ate the expense of postage and the cost of a CD, and in my eyes, that makes them slightly more deserving of review consideration since they've actually made an investment in hopes of something in return. It's not a case of playing favourites or expecting more promos in the future if I review something now. It's simply showing courtesy to the labels and artists that take the trouble to send me their material. If I had the time, I'd try and review *every* item that I receive for free - and since I run my own website, I can review more stuff than if I was only contributing to print mags (assuming I have the time to do so, which I haven't really lately, but I'm trying to catch up). In the past, I *have* reviewed material I've purchased. For example, a couple of things I wrote for the upcoming issue of Grooves are coverage of discs and records I bought. If I buy something and it totally blows me away, I'll definately try and let people know about it. But if forced to choose, the promos will win out almost every time. I have no idea why im jumping in on this thread, but suffice it to say Im getting sick of all the angst on this list! Ive been on IDM for years now and I dont remember this much mean-ness since the Gil Gershman shoot-out days! Lemme quote Rodney King fo ya' "Can't we all just GET ALONG???!?!" Is there something in the water? Have y'all not done your Y2K shopping yet? My first reaction to Tom posting to the list for small labels to send in promos was "Gee, what magazine was that? Ill have to pick up an issue if they are interested in THIS music". Its not like youd ever see a Suction - or even a SKAM record reviewed in ad-saturated magazine like Rolling Bone - and if you did, theyd likely toss it aside as art-wank since its not Rockerfeller Skanky or Ibiza enough for college freshmen getting their first tattoos and goatees. Cant speak for everyone here but this list but it is getting really flamey lately. And to slam a music reviewer for announcing to the micro-labels that he'll give them the time of day is horse shit. I wish more 'lazy' reviewers took interest in IDM labels - Id be more interested in reading their publications. jumpin' in where I dont belong- ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-1156 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems Fort Worth, Texas --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
