Hi all - So, for a long time, I've always wondered about checking out Mike Ink stuff. I'm quite enthusiastic (like everybody) about Basic Channel / Chain Reaction, but I'm on the fence on Brinkmann (too intellectual / minimal), and I don't like Sahko / Panasonic. The only Mike Ink I've heard has been on either Webcasts or the Mego site (which is a fantastic resource for checking out Real Audio). I was wondering if anyone better schooled in this than me could give me an overview of where to start. The Studio Eins CD for sure, but what about the Gas albums, Profan stuff, Freiland, etc.? With so much stuff to buy, both past and present (and future) I obviously have to make choices, and I'd rather not buy a pile of Mike Ink only to put 90% of it in the "good, but not good enough to keep" pile I so often employ. Thanks, Matt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

If you dont like brinkmann's minimal stuff then you might not like a lot of Mike Ink's works for Mike Ink was the one who really pioneered the ultra minimal sound several years ago with his Studio 1 series. Brinkmann's first release was a remix album of the Studio 1 series. Mike's profan stuff is also minimal but with more of a funky tech-house twist. Mike Ink's Gas stuff is really deep an dubby - not minimal at all. you may like this if you like the bc/cr sound. Mike also does a lot of stuff that has a strong acid flavor too. Overall Mike Ink has over 200 releases so there are bound to be things you like and dislike. I suggest you buy the Profan sampler cd to see if the various sounds on that label suit you. Same goes for the Studio 1 comp. -->-Lance--- lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

if you find brinkmann to minimal, ink might not be the way to go. some of his aliases are very stripped down - studio 1, freiland, and some profan (although the newest studio 1 is very funky and housey). i would recommend gas and the burger/ink collaboration. gas is very deep, not quite like basic channel, but i imagine there is a high crossover factor. --- clietz@enteract.com On Tue, 9 Nov 1999 23:29:17 AeOtaku wrote:

M:I:5 "Maßstab" on Profan is a keeper...it's got layers of weird out-of-time stuff on top of straight beats part of what's great about Mike Ink is that it sounds like it takes him about an hour to make a record __________________________________________________________________ miau-maiu international: redefine your dissatisfaction www.miau-miau.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have maybe 5 or 6 of them and I think they are hilarious records but what's wrong with that? Humour does belong to music! Much better than "i'm going to die tomorrow with lots of pain" mentality that those showgazer types have... btw: How's the new Studio 1?

imo Studio 1 doesn't stand up too well on its own, but it's an excellent "DJ Tool" to mix into other (more melodic?) stuff. I've certainly never sat and listened through the whole CD in one go! I completely and totally disagree. The studio 1 series, to me, is one of the funkiest sets of records out there. There's something about the bounce factor in the way those rhythms are programmed that absolutely slays me every time. The purple 12" is as funky, to me, as any James Brown record. (IDM...threads.....merging......help.....) As Irene just mentioned, they're fantastic for mixing. I, on the other hand, am perfectly content to listen to the CD all the way through, preferably in the car with the bass on crunk (Mos Def album, anyone?). i'd have to agree on this one, studio 1, while maybe not something that everyone would want to sit down and listen to, has some very strong qualities. first of all, similar to most other minimal releases, there's almost more said in some music by what's not added as opposed to heaping together sound upon sound. just because all music isn't as 'involved' as crank or ae doesn't mean that it's a joke. that's a pretty strong statement to be placed upon any artist or release. secondly, in the dj tool vein, i've heard several good dj's who can dj nothing but studio 1, brinkmann, etc. and make it just as exciting as any other high energy set i've ever heard. it's all in the dj/artists' creativity and what they choose to do and when. timing. something that i'm sure that every listmember has a good idea about. as for me, there are times when i'd much rather sit down and listen to a studio 1, ester brinkmann, plastikman, a self described 'minimal' artist (urban sounds interview), etc. release than something that's more 'involved' (lack of a better term). anyways, my $.02 craig. w111cms@hotmail.com

Maybe its just because I feel the best music out there has taken a turn, less repetitive and much more attention to arrangement. I felt ripped off at the time when I bought Studio 1 and still do.
