Hello. A short while ago I was faced with the task of creating a number of MDs for a friend. He's into the likes of Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and Jarre but has never bothered with modern electronica (or IDM, or whatever you want to call it), because the likes of 2 Unlimited and the Prodigy's more comedic turns have tainted his perception of what "techno" might sound like. So, here's what I came up with. Anyone else created similar compilations for IDM virgins? If so, what tracks did you choose and what was the end result? I completed these MDs a while back but have yet to post them off to him: md#1 - stuff.1 The first MD was intended to be a relatively "gentle" introduction to the genre, containing a lot of melodic stuff with excellent production work. Nitin Sawhney - "Letting Go" Ozric Tentacles - "Waterfall City" Thomas Fehlmann - "Superfruhstuck" Sun Electric - "Alzir" The Orb - "Mickey Mars (7" edit)" Bola - "Forcasa (Parts 1-3)" 808 State - "Nephatiti" Future Sound of London - "My Kingdom (LP version)" Tangerine Dream - "Kiew Mission" A Guy Called Gerald - "Time Waits for No Man" Orbital - "The Box (part 2)" md#2 - stuff.2 The second MD started throwing in more of the slightly alernative stuff, where the structure and texture of the tracks might otherwise be a bit jarring to someone who's not used to this sort of thing. Plaid - "Gel Lab" Autechre - "Rpeg" Funkstorung - "Storsender" Swap - "Untitled" (from the Musik aus Strom EP) Boards of Canada - "Pete Standing Alone" Aemic - "ADSL" Chris De Luca - "3" Andre Estermann - "Untitled" (from "I'm So Bored with the USA 2") CiM - "Friends I've Made" Plod - "Markkinal" Mira Calix - "Ms Meteo" Aphex Twin - "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" LFO - "Shut Down" md#3 - autechre.1 Over the next two MDs I recorded a 150-minute Autechre primer, taking 2 tracks from each album and 1 track from each EP (counting "ep7" as an album, but ignoring Gescom and limited edition Autechre vinyl). "Kapol Introl" (Incunabula) "Eggshell" (Incunabula) "Bcdtmx" (Basscad) "Lost" (Anti) "Slip" (Amber) "Yulquen" (Amber) "Garbagemx36" (Garbage) "Drane" (Peel Session) "Eutow" (Tri Repetae) "C/Pach" (Tri Repetae) md#4 - autechre.2 "Second Peng" (Anvil Vapre) "Latent Quarter" (Envane) "Cipater" (Chiastic Slide) "Rettic Ac" (Chiastic Slide) "Tilapia" (Cichlisuite) "Rae" (lp5) "Fold4,Wrap5" (lp5) "Outpt" (ep7) "Dropp" (ep7) East Flatbush Project - "Tried by Twelve (Autechre mx)" Various - "9 (Autechre remix)" -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have a friend just like that. I turned him onto IDM, another mutual friend who DJs jungle/house turned him on that. Guess who won? :O) So, here's what I came up with. Anyone else created similar compilations for IDM virgins? If so, what tracks did you choose and what was the end result? I completed these MDs a while back but have yet to post them off to him: I played my friend some Autechre and he wasn't at all into it. Actually, I was really impressed that he was able to say that, but maybe it's easy to when you don't have the knowledge of Autechre's street cred. He liked "Incunabula" a little bit, but since I hate old Ae I vetoed that. I played him some of everything (Basic Channel, FAX, Warp, etc. plus all sorts of obscurities) and he was by far the most into I_S_A_N, BoC, and especially Black Dog/Plaid/B12 et al. So I just went from there and made tapes of more melodic stuff. Some Derrick May / some Mad Mike / some Carl Craig too. i'd be one to say that autechre are surprisingly constant. if you take each release & compare it to what was being done at the time, you find that they were usually somewhat in advance (though people caught on very fast each time...) 'incunabula' for one is great... 'eggshell' is an amazing track. but there's also some heavily forgettable tracks on that album, as there are on every subsequent albums. from 'incunabula' to lp5 (still haven't heard ep7!) autechre love to walk the line between sharp composition & some sense of failure. 'amber' is lush & fine... but not too original. 'tri repetae' might be the best balanced album ~ though it doesn't have any radically standout tracks. 'chiastic slide' goes fast forward into academic music... at the cost of forgetting to write actual songs. & lp5 is just as thrilling as it is irritating. other autechre constant: the utter lack of change during a track. sometimes booth/brown just seem happy letting a pattern go because it sounds cool. & well, it might sound cool on hi tech loudspeakers, the exact moment when you first play it, prefferably while completely high, but for a regular joe like me with a hitachi boombox, the subtlety kind of gets lost during say, the first 2 tracks of lp5, or the entirety of 'chiastic slide' (except that gorgeous first track.) ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
