I have a friend just like that. I turned him onto IDM, another mutual friend
who DJs jungle/house turned him on that. Guess who won? :O)
So, here's what I came up with. Anyone else created similar
compilations for IDM virgins? If so, what tracks did you choose and
what was the end result? I completed these MDs a while back but have
yet to post them off to him:
I played my friend some Autechre and he wasn't at all into it. Actually,
I was really impressed that he was able to say that, but maybe it's
easy to when you don't have the knowledge of Autechre's street cred.
He liked "Incunabula" a little bit, but since I hate old Ae I vetoed that.
I played him some of everything (Basic Channel, FAX, Warp, etc. plus
all sorts of obscurities) and he was by far the most into I_S_A_N, BoC,
and especially Black Dog/Plaid/B12 et al. So I just went from there and
made tapes of more melodic stuff. Some Derrick May / some Mad Mike /
some Carl Craig too.
