the new steffan robbers ep on fwd, "sierra romeo," is phenomenal. a
glorious mixture of spacey circa-'95 idm-y melodic textural gushes and
peerless, microdimensional, hyperdetailed (but also unbusy) rhythmic
programming. similar to arovane (who's fwd ep, though not as good as his
other releases, is also worth getting), a fantastic fusion of analog and
digital sounds and approaches. best of all, the tracks are *written*. there
is *progression* -- *themes* that interact and evolve and circle back
around in various ways. this is what i always wanted all the hype
surrounding first wave idm artists to lead me to; with the exception of the
black dog and a few others, i was always disappointed at how mundane that
stuff turned out to be when i finally heard it.

I agree that the new Stefan Robbers 12" is pretty good,
although I think "phenomenal" is a bit of an overstatement.
It's somewhat of a return to his melodic Florence sound of
days ago but with a couple new discoveries. It's not as good
as "A Touch of Heaven" or "The Vineyard" by any means.
Definitely a little bit slow and a little minimal, although I suppose
"A Touch of Heaven" (the best Lowlands track ever, IMHO)
was a little minimal as well. The problem for me with this record
is that it almost sounded better on 45 and seems pressed on 33.
I would recommend for Robbers fans, Lowlands fans, or people
who just need a good record to buy these days (they are in
somewhat short supply), but I wouldn't recommend it universally.
To really hear some top notch Lowlands check out the Agenda
21 and 22 comps on Eevolute and the Lowlands comp on New
Electronica, and while you're at it some early 100% Pure 12"s
(especially anything by Sterac who are incredible), or for that
matter some old Florence material on various labels.
