the new steffan robbers ep on fwd, "sierra romeo," is phenomenal. a
glorious mixture of spacey circa-'95 idm-y melodic textural gushes and
peerless, microdimensional, hyperdetailed (but also unbusy) rhythmic
programming. similar to arovane (who's fwd ep, though not as good as his
other releases, is also worth getting), a fantastic fusion of analog and
digital sounds and approaches. best of all, the tracks are *written*. there
is *progression* -- *themes* that interact and evolve and circle back
around in various ways. this is what i always wanted all the hype
surrounding first wave idm artists to lead me to; with the exception of the
black dog and a few others, i was always disappointed at how mundane that
stuff turned out to be when i finally heard it.
