Just starting into another listen of this good ol' 'Clicks and Cuts' comp. I have to agree with whoever said the other day that there's quite a bit of dead weight, but fuck some of the tracks have got me so excited! In accordance with that, I wanted this simple question answered: Is the Frank Bretschneider track, 'Kern', indicative of the much-praised album 'Rand'? I love this one! Really beautiful sound design without being too far removed from the so-called "classic" IDM sound. (Not that "too far" is always a bad thing. :) Michael -+- Jet Jaguar MP3s http://mp3.com/jetjag/ -+- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I agree with you that Frank Bretschneider's track is a highlight on the Clicks + Cuts comp. But his track on the comp is a little more percussive & glitchy than any of this tracks on Kern which have more of a minimal experimental sound. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Rand and recommend it highly. Just dont expect any "classic idm" sounds on the album. You can hear a track from the album in RA at: http://www.mdos.at/detail-byartist.php3?pid=1733 -->-Lance--- lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm just listening to 'Rand' and really enjoying it. Well, in a cold and shrink-wrapped kind of way. :-) How does Komet material compare to this, stylistically? Similar stuff? Being ever paranoid, I should double-check: Komet is an alias under which Frank Bretschneider records, yes? Yes Komet is a guise of Frank Bretschneider but there is also a US rock band of the same name so be sure you're getting the right artist before buying. Regarding the similarity of the Komet releases to Bretschneider's Rand album on Mille Plateaux, the Komet tracks are much more structurally layered & complex as opposed to the more minimal and simplistic tracks on Rand. I personally prefer Bretschneider's Rand sound but the Komet releases are still good. Bretschneider discog: . Komet: flex cd (Rastermusic) . Komet: saat cd (Rastermusic) . Komet: 20 to 2000 - january cd (Rastermusic) . Frank Bretschneider: rand cd/2xlp (Mille Plateaux) Plus Bretschneider participated in varying degrees on these: . Tol: trap cd (Rastermusic) . Produkt: float cd (Rastermusic) . Produkt: stretch cd (Rastermusic) . Signal: waves + lines cd (Rastermusic) . Signal: centrum cd (Rasternusic) [forthcoming] Comp appearances: . Microscopic Sound comp cd (Caipirinha) . .aiff comp cd (12k) . Clicks_+_Cuts comp 2xcd/3xlp (Mille Plateaux) . 12k1008 comp cd (12k) btw: there will be a new Komet album out on 12k over the summer. so expect some more bretschneider output soon! -->-Lance--- lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Komet is Bretschneider; some of the earlier albums may have had other members (or am I thinking of Produkt, another Rastermusic group?). Generally speaking, Komet is Frank getting funky and expansive; the tracks on Komet's releases typically stretch out for a much longer duration than those on _Rand_. That said, Komet's music is still minimal and has some of the same clicky/twitchy insectoid sounds heard on _Rand_. Check out Komet's _Flex_ for what I think is some of Bretschneider's best material. Frank's also on the following highly recommended comps: _Clicks+Cuts_ (Mille Plateaux) and _Microscopic Sound_ (12k).
