I recently added some Erik Satie and Olivier Messiaen to my collection and wanted to ask if anyone could recommend some other classical composers/pieces that are in the same IDMish vein. I discovered those two from Aphex's top 10 from last year and found them very enjoyable. I've heard a few names thrown around here and there in the list, but I'm not sure which ones to pursue. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Satie is one of my special favourites, especially Gnossiennes and Trois Sarabandes. The beauty in simplicity of his music is unparalleled. Also, I have found Cage, Stockhausen and Glass to be in the essential group of classical composers related to electronic music. My uncle, Usko Merilainen is a renowned finnish composer of classical and electroacoustic music; his works are very difficult and interesting. If you can get your hands on his records, I recommend "Kuguku", one of his electroacoustic experiments. There is a decent article on him at http://www.sonances.qc.ca/composers/meril.htm. -- nuutti-iivari meril?inen -> gordon@diversion.org : diversion communications technostructuralist + information architect + media designer

Couple of suggestions: Gustav Mahler, Symphony No. 3 -- I'd strongly suggest the version conducted by Claudio Abbado, who has a flair for this type of music. John Cage, Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano -- there are many recordings, and you might even want more than one. Preparation turns the regular piano into an ensemble of gentle percussion. In some ways these pieces owe much to Satie. --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > Forthcoming CD SENSELESS on Mindfield Records MINDCD03 Cathartium 14 "The electricity is no better off than on."

try some micheal nyman stuff, more 'new classical' than 'classical' but well worth the price of admission!!! 'Drowning by Numbers' , 'The Draughtsman's Contact' and 'A Zed and Two Noughts' are especially good. se@n ----------

Steve Reich : Music for 18 Musicians Octet / Music for a large ensemble Drumming Variations for Strings / Variations For Mallet instruments voice and Organ Different Trains / Electric Counterpoint All of the above are highly reccomended, their use of Counterpoint and repetition have been highly influential on 'idm'. Id also heartily reccomend 'John Wall - Fractuur' on Touch, this guy samples artists ranging from Ryoji Ikeda to John Cage, but in a very innovative way, if youre into touch/farmers manual/noise and fancy a bit of dark modern classical this is the horse for you.
