Man that beat shows up everywhere! "Woo! Yeah! Woo! Yeah! Woo! Yeah!" etc. Anyway..speaking of the new single, Oil has got to be another FSOL disguise...after all, the oil funk mix is the same tune that showed up on that ISDN transmission to LA...right? khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu

I think Oil is actually the junglist Leon Mar whom FSOL signed to their label...but I haven't heard the oil mixes though, cause my single's the UK version which only contains the short Leon Mar mix and the 4 "parts"(??). Regards, Phei Wee

^^^^^ interesting, then why did i get a postcard through the letterbox a week or so back advertising the new mixes of we have explosive and on the back in small writing at the bottom it says something like "first independant release on FSOL's label EBV...Oil "slight of hand" -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

Yeah, y'know FSOL has never used psuedonyms before....;) Actually, I had heard about that claim too - but I think it's a bit wierd to play a live set (well, as live as fsol is ever gonna get) and use someone else's remix. khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu

This sounds very much like a sample from Bessie Smith, originally recorded in, ooh, the 1960s. I couldn't really disagree more with whoever made the positive comment about the 'stories' in Reload's Collection Of.. I lent this to someone and at first he didn't like the music because the stories were so bad. They really are awful. The new Locust single sounds pretty interesting - he gets away with using what in a more naive age we would call vocals. Even the 808 State mix is good. More detail later perhaps when I've listened more. adam

i heard this wacked out 12" last night called "electronic battle weapon". that's all it said on it. catalog number XDUSTDJLP1 or something very similar to that. no clues as to who it might be. the side that really kicked had this tinny beat with a very fucked up and mutated sample of a guy saying IT DOESN'T MATTER over and over again put through a seemingly endless variety of effect tricks. when the bass came in, WHAM... it was astounding. had an extremely intense breakdown followed by a buildup of static that eventually turned into a sort of pulsing wall of beat. it kept going and turned into this squirty little analog synth motif. the IT DOESN'T MATTER guy popped up again as well. the other side was more kinda standard drum machiney techno but still good. just not as blinding as IT DOESN'T MATTER. (that voice is still running through my head this morning). anybody know what/who this is? M.A.J. Huffman writes:

yeah, i commented on this when the album came out. the stories read like submissions for a pretentious college literary wannabe journal. i majored in english at school and crappy little booklets full of that kind of overwrought prose littered the floors at the building where i spent most of my time. ugh. speaking of overwrought prose, roll on the .sig... -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. This sounds like it could have been one of the promo copies of the Chemical Brothers - "It Doesn't Matter" from their album that was released just recently [Dig Your Own Hole.] The choon is massive and it sounds like what you're describing and from what I understand there was a 12" sent to some retailers along with promo copies of their Block Rockin Beats single and DYOH album. The XDUST part of the catalog number also sounds about right too -- The Bros last album was called Exit Planet Dust so... there may be some correlation there as well. -peter

so you're saying i shouldn't have been so quick to write them off as pop sell outs. :) there's life in the old boys yet, it would seem. "massive" is an understatement. this may even make up for Setting Sun *and* Life Is Sweet. that would be some feat. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. Oil release in the April issue of Muzik Mag. But I can see your reason for thinking it's FSOL. Quite the same production and sound as Brian and Gary use. Which makes me wonder why they would let Leon put out something which is basically a rip off of themselves? The ultimate ego boost?! Just a thought Ben

I believe the original sample is from Think (about it) by Lyn Collins. The album has recently been repressed for those of you tracking down the beats. sasha in boston
