I think Oil is actually the junglist Leon Mar whom FSOL signed to their label...but I haven't heard the oil mixes though, cause my single's the UK version which only contains the short Leon Mar mix and the 4 "parts"(??). Regards, Phei Wee

This sounds very much like a sample from Bessie Smith, originally recorded in, ooh, the 1960s. I couldn't really disagree more with whoever made the positive comment about the 'stories' in Reload's Collection Of.. I lent this to someone and at first he didn't like the music because the stories were so bad. They really are awful. The new Locust single sounds pretty interesting - he gets away with using what in a more naive age we would call vocals. Even the 808 State mix is good. More detail later perhaps when I've listened more. adam

i heard this wacked out 12" last night called "electronic battle weapon". that's all it said on it. catalog number XDUSTDJLP1 or something very similar to that. no clues as to who it might be. the side that really kicked had this tinny beat with a very fucked up and mutated sample of a guy saying IT DOESN'T MATTER over and over again put through a seemingly endless variety of effect tricks. when the bass came in, WHAM... it was astounding. had an extremely intense breakdown followed by a buildup of static that eventually turned into a sort of pulsing wall of beat. it kept going and turned into this squirty little analog synth motif. the IT DOESN'T MATTER guy popped up again as well. the other side was more kinda standard drum machiney techno but still good. just not as blinding as IT DOESN'T MATTER. This sounds like it could have been one of the promo copies of the Chemical Brothers - "It Doesn't Matter" from their album that was released just recently [Dig Your Own Hole.] The choon is massive and it sounds like what you're describing and from what I understand there was a 12" sent to some retailers along with promo copies of their Block Rockin Beats single and DYOH album. The XDUST part of the catalog number also sounds about right too -- The Bros last album was called Exit Planet Dust so... there may be some correlation there as well. -peter

so you're saying i shouldn't have been so quick to write them off as pop sell outs. :) there's life in the old boys yet, it would seem. Could it be "It Doesn't Matter," from Chemical Brothers' newest album, _Dig_Your_Own_Hole_? Sounds like it could potentially match what you're describing. The title "electronic battle weapon " sounds to me like an american hip-hop DJ name, not like a brit/chems name. If they ripped it off for their disk, well, that's pretty pathetic. So what I'm wondering is the record as originally described (with the it doesn't matter stuff) the dj rectangle version or the chems ripping off the title? What's the verdict? -CF

The new chemicals album in it's entirety is on the astralwerks/caroline web page, and I tried in vain to find a single cut worth listening to more than a minute of. It seems like whatever ideas they may have had and displayed on their first 2 EPs are well and truly played out, and they're left with nothing but the ticks and affectations of their style, with no substance to hang it on. Really dreadful stuff in my opinion. according to a recent electronic musician interview with the dust brothers (i think it was EM maybe keyboard .. not sure) there was a lengthy section about the chemical bros.. it seems that the chemicals were really big fans of the dust bros. (and why not .. very incredible work with the dust bros) and were originally named the dust bros (outta respect i guess) when the chems started to get big there were a couple of cease and desist papers sent about and the chemicals were forced to change their name & the werent to happy about it ... so most of their early work contains some thinly veiled rips at los bros dust ... the dust bros (for better or worse im not goin' there) think that the chems music is pretty trite and are really none too happy with the whole thing ... . annwn . .

Hmmm, interesting - in the new ish of Select, there's an article about the Chems and they said they didn't mind too much changing their name (since they *did* "steal" it from the Dust Bros originally). But I seem to remember it wasn't quite that friendly at the time.... cya brian

The only releases made that were vaguely interesting or new were under the name 'The Dust Brothers', By the time they changed their name to Chemicals they were just another cog in the Underworld/Orbital commercial machine. actually he has only won the U.S. Championship, he was in the World Finals but did not win. He is dope though, he played at a rave I was at a couple of months ago and did so wicked scratching over some electro. derek
