Picked this up yesterday, and have been wondering, what was he thinking? Does anyone LIKE this music? And if so, can you explain why? Words that come to mind when I listen to it: Lugubrious Murky Atonal Aimless Formless Fun-less Pretentious And it has no beats whatsoever. Didn't he put out a disc recently more in the "Generation Star Wars" vein? What is that one called? What was Mille Plateux thinking too?

There are so many ways to organize "lugubrious, murky, atonal" material so that you get some sense of overall coherence and purpose. Unfortunately I couldn't hear that kind of structure at all.

I suppose _The Destroyer_ might qualify. _Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5_, by contrast, sounds incoherent on the surface but -is- quite coherent once you dig in deeply enough. --Mark

Haven't got it yet, but I'm looking forward to listening to it (despite the review here), because he's consistently trying new things and mucking about, often with *very* mixed results, but it's fun to listen to him try. For instance, half of _Hypermodern_Jazz_2000.5_ is pretty annoying, but the other half is very well put together. It's a somewhat schizophrenic CD, but I never skip any of the tracks when I listen to it. Your adjectives describe what I first thought of _Low_On_Ice_ when I got it, but after listening to it more I began to have a much greater appreciation for it. _Ice_ has a bit of dub in it; does this one?

I don't think so. _Hypermodern_ and _The_Destroyer_ were his last two albums I think, and neither sounds much like _GSW_. In fact, I don't think he has another album like _GSW_. -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwatch parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry

Yeah, I regretted buying it too. I would maybe use it if I were playing multiple turntables, or as background sound while playing Quakeworld. I really like the ATR stuff, and I've heard other non - drumnbass stuff by him that was excellent. It's just that I don't get much out of this one.

My unfavorable critique? I take it back... I'm listening to it now while working at my computer, and it's pretty cool. It's like old sci-fi movie theme music, or maybe kind of like "Last Year At Marienbad" or some other conceptual 60's french art-film, atonal, meandering, whimpering sometimes. But all teched-out. Good background music. (I personally have no problem whatsoever classifying music as "good background music" and still thinking it's really good music. It doesn't have to get my pulse pumpin and my brain thinkin to be good. Even some really hard techno for me makes good music to listen to while reading, just for texture. I also think it's okay to buy paintings because they match your sofa.) Anyway, sometimes a second listen ain't such a bad idea. It's not what I expected, but it's cool.
