Does anybody know if its possible to join the "club" digitally (through e-mail or fax), or do I have to send out that nice Autechre card from my nice copy of Tri-Repetae? The 12" has two tracks? Any cover art? :) (the coverage of this potentially grandscale release has been minimal at best...and i'd like to see the big picture before spending 90 cents on postage...) I'd have to say that amongst the Autechre releases, there really isn't anything I'd have to shake a finger at...(I have them all, including the 3x10" box set of Basscadet) however...the only Gescom release I like is the 12" on Clear. I don't have Gescom 1, but I found Gescom 2 to be annoying, and the Motor 12" on Source to be irritating and dull (though the flipside first track is almost good). I hope every autechre fan has bought the Soft Ballet remix album, because the Autechre remix is superb. Certainly outperforms the rather pointless trip hop stab on "Refried Food." Well, I've certainly been put in my place. Let me get into the details. Snackwitch goes nowhere...it's a cheap cut'n paste job from start to finish. Compared to the carefully detailed progression in their other material (The Sound of Machines...in a word: wow) but this track feels bland and emotionally deprived. I agree that Mag would be great in a 20,000+ gig, however, it's again dull and contrived on the home system.

about gescom: I enjoyed the motor 12". The clear release of gescom is pretty cool, take longer broader strokes to accomplish the ending effect. That's a shame. Gescom 1 on Skam is four tracks of absolute brilliance, the style being not at all like it's two tracker follow up. My advice is to hunt down your missing Gescom.

I wasn't too keen on the distorted breakbeats, but the tune (if you can call it that) really makes the piece for me. Certainly not pointless. -Ed

According to Republic Records, the two SKAM releases are being repressed and will out out again in about 2 weeks...oh, and there's a third one out as well..if I recall correctly the catalogue is SKA07. Hope this is an improvement over the second one... I don't think you should write off Gescom 2 just because it is not the boys' usual style. I was shocked when I first heard it but I don't think you should compare it to their other stuff since it is so different. They definitely get my praise for trying something different. I don't like the EP as much as the others but I keep playing it and will continue to do so because what Gescom are trying to express was not immediately obvious on the first listens. Just last night I appreciated the beats in Snackwitch like I have never done, but I do much prefer the other track. What I am trying to say is that the way you should approach music you don't like at first, should be that you don't fully appreciate what the artist/s were trying to do with the music, and not just say "It's cheap shite" and live your life thinking that that track is rubbish and does not deserve listening to. -Ed

You are committing the same crime that you are accusing me of committing. I've tried hard to explain my criticism of Gescom 2 as a 12", and not part of the Booth/Brown continuum...I don't like it. It has nothing to do with comparing it to Autechre material, or Gescom material. By simply accusing me of writing off Gescom 2 "just because it is not the boys' usual style" you are point blank labelling me without actually reading my response. A good example of this is Orbital's album, "Snivilisations." As a polarity to their previous releases (Diversions, Brown Album) Snivilisations can be a real let down to the dance scene, while it really made the the home listening crowd perk their ears. From the album "In Sides" tracks like "The Girl with the Sun in her Head" are a completely different style to say "Lush 3-1" or "Remind" from the Brown album. It's simply impossible to compare the tracks because they come from different backgrounds, styles and times. Instead, you have to step back and take each track individually. That is why some bands use pseudonyms to experiment with various styles (try comparing Global Communication to Jedi Knights or Reload) and why more mainstream bands are criticized for trying new things under the same guise.... Note...in no way am I attempting to piss of Edward...I just knew the problem I was facing my ridiculing Gescom 2, and Edward hit it bang on. I had to respond. Just to follow up on personal experience, I've had several occassions over the years where I originally thought a group was complete crap, only to later discover how rich the music truly was. Just out of coincidence, Autechre was one of those groups... I think I first heard one of their tracks off Incunabula at a listening station at Tower, and thought it was pretty grinding, irritating noise. Only after catching the track they did on A.I.-II did I go back and re-discover the Basscadet single, and later the whole of their discography. Now my impression of them is of an "intelligent" Aphex Twin. :-) (don't go starting a flame war just cause I think Autechre is better than Aphex either... I'm entitled to my $.02, so there. :p ) Anyways, some stuff I picked up today... Resistance D.- Live At Mayday (12") M5 featuring Brad Raker- Sanctuary (12") Prana- Cyclone (CD) The first two up there are singles... Resistance D. brings us a couple of remixes of Echoplexing- Rosso Mix and Assign's Exploring All Aspects Of Sound Resolution Mix. Both do a good job, and I know I'll be using them in some upcoming mix tapes. I haven't had a chance to listen to the flip side, but it's supposedly 15 minutes of them Live at Mayday. At any rate, it sounds like your standard German techno, but with a leaning toward the more melodic side (if there can be such a thing given all the hardcore stuff I keep hearing from over there :-) Next up is M5, with 3 mixes of Sanctuary, including an Electroliners Remix. Anybody who's been clubbing in the past year has certainly heard the floor stompers by Brother Grimm (Radiate and Survive). Well, Electroliners did a remix of Radiate, and this mix of Sanctuary certainly lives up to my expectations. It's not as trancey as the Radiate mix, but I am thoroughly grooving to it. And, at $5.44, you get three other excellent tracks, including a B-side: Gotta Feeling (It's All Good). The last one I bought becaues it looked very much like a single I snagged a few weeks ago by Endora. I now realize that this is not Endora, but it's still good straight up Goa trance stuff. Both releases are on the Matsuri Productions label, presumably out of the U.K., since the back of the CD case says "Distributed by Flying Records, U.K." Cyclone has 10 tracks, the first of which is a prologue co-produced by Andy Guthrie. I think he's got something to do with Planet Dog, but can't remember. Anyways, the second track comes in with a brief ambient intro, then the full effect collage of sound drops in with beats-repetitious galore. I can see how this type of trance can seem boring, but when it's pumpin at full volume on a packed dance floor, nobody's gonna care :) Anyways, that's just a brief synopsis for y'all. Now back to your regularly scheduled , uh... schedules... =) OnNow: Album 88, 88.5- "The Planet 8 Show". I was just responding to what I read in the post, I'm sorry if I ended up labelling you. The part of your post below was what made me think you were comparing:

It's fair enough to say you don't like the 12", but I don't think this music deserves deep criticism unless it really is rubbish, which it isn't. Rather than relate the 12" to other works by Rob and Sean, I can relate the music to a 'feel' that their music gives me. I can sort of imagine how they are thinking from listening to their music, and "Mag" fits perfectly into this idea. -Ed

I think some people may be missing the point here. 'Snackwich' is one of the most humourous tracks autechre/gescom have done. Listen to the sample at the beginning- it sounds like one of those newsreel films! This track defies any in-depth analysis as to 'direction' because it's just a bit of a laugh, isn't it? Actually, in a mixmag interview they said that the clear gescom EP is a bit of a piss-take as well. Humourous they maybe, but there's nought wrong with a bit of humour in music- look at Dr. Rockitt. What makes 'Snackwitch' such a humourous piece is the unlikely collaging of that newsreel sample and Ae's crunchy beats... and it somehow works. Richard.

For me, it's one thing to release an album with a few pisstakes, but I don't get anything out of Gescom 2. Successful pisstakes include anything by Sheep on Drugs (who coincidently recorded a jungle remix for their new album of The Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting for my Man") Jake Slazenger, a few tracks on The Jedi Knights album, and a few tracks on Delerium's "Semantic Spaces" album. But there's real substance and content...I like that in a song. I don't really get much out of a musical joke...but that's my loss I guess. It surprises me that the clear ep was a joke, cause if it was, it was a damn fine joke. It's one of my favorite releases from the band.
