Hot on the trail of the Andrea Parker 12", I checked out a new L.A. area record/clothing store called Groove Rider yesterday. Andrea proved to be elusive, but on the racks I spied the "Allroy Road Tracks" 12". Well, since this is the Future Of Music As We Know It [tm], of course I had to give it a spin ... Bwah hah hah. Please tell me it was a joke. "Central Line" turned out to be nothing but a busy vaguely drum n' bass rhythm with aimless Jazz noodlings over it. If I want to hear Jazz-influenced lines over phat rhythms, I'll go straight to the master thanks - Carl Craig. "Sarcacid" and "Nux Vomica" were forgettable. I will grant him that "Toast For Hardy" contained some interesting noises, but one decent track on a 12" doth not the Future Of Music make. Or are we not supposed to take this one seriously because it was released as "Duke of Harringay" and not as "Squarepusher"? Anyway, I'm not convinced. Andrea Parker has it all over this guy, for now. IMNSHO. (On the other hand, I couldn't find anything there to get excited about. Tried the new Meat Beat "Asbestos Lead Asbestos", Slab, some stuff on Tunnel Records from Germany, a Goa 12" on Flying Rhino, UR 032, etc. ... nothing. Not even "Journeys by DJ: Coldcut" did it for me - thought the mixing *is* excellent. Sigh. Maybe I'm just grumpy from the 90+ F heat ... ) - Greg

I don't think Rephlex, and all the others who put their tuppence in were doing themselves any favours by hyping Tom up, as people will only end up disappointed. I went and bought this record with an open mind, not expecting brilliance, not expecting a new Chick Corea (I mean... !), and I found that it was a really good record, with some faults, but also some unique ideas. Granted, the Plug records wipe the floor with this in terms of Jazz wierdness, but the live instrumentation, range of tempos, and generally dirty lo-fi production make this a must buy, a perfect antidote to the Movin Shadow/Good Looking sound (whose records I also really like!) I must say I'm looking forward to the Rephlex and Warp releases, despite, not because of, the hype. GE>Anyway, I'm not convinced. Andrea Parker has it all over this guy, for now. GE>IMNSHO. Not having heard any Andrea Parker material except for the 'io' remix on Mowax, can anyone give me some feedback on the LP or EP, as I thought the remix was, like, total rubbish. Granted, it wasn't godly, but neither was the remix on DJ food's album, which prompted me to go seek out this Duke O' Harringay thing. I mean, Alroy is pretty neat, and fairly unique, with lots of nice muddy production and real jazz-improv keyboard/bass solos here n' there, but the last couple of tracks are a tad boring (and is the staticy distortion in the bass a bad pressing thing or an intentional thing or what), and the whole thing as a 12" without regard to its unique sound absoultely pales in comparison to, say, the Hangable Auto Bulb, or any of the Photeks I bought a few weeks ago. I believe that the forthcoming _album_ is what precisely was hyped up, however, so we'll have to wait for that before really passing judgement on Sqpr, now, won't we? Mine too. I thought I was the only one. The surface noise seems to be especially bad on the second side (crackle, crackle). Is everyone's like this? It makes me cringe when I listen to the record but it seems more managable on tape. They should press some more (on nice viynl like Conumber) and trade them for us. Hope they repress this one on nicer materials... /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

this? It makes me cringe when I listen to the record Either my copy is pressed on that nice vinyl (the type without rings) or you guys are whining and awful lot about precious little. The only non-typical-for-vinyl surface noise and/or distortion that I find is maybe on "Toast for Hardy" and I think that it was intentional. Andrew

Naah. My copy is totally shit too. Tom is a total recording perfectionist, we've just recut the Port Rhombus vinyl to squeeze out another couple of dBs... g.
