Have I missed something? Locust seems to be an IDM god; the only stuff I have is Truth Is Born of Arguments, which I really don't get. Is this typical of his stuff? How they can call it ambient is beyond me. It's just too damn noisy! OK, some of the sounds are gorgeously crunchy, but I just can't get into it (and I have tried, honest!). It's so rare that I buy something that's been revered on this list and I don't like it. Go on someone, tell me what you like about that album and I'll see if I can approach it from a different angle. Paddy OnNow: Jacob's Optical Stairway. Now this _is_ good stuff.

Maybe *I've* missed something, but I've only seen a handful of recent posts re: Locust.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This is *exactly* why I like this album. :)

Fair enough; YMMV. You might check out his earlier albums (_Natural Composite_ or _Weathered Well_) as they aren't as noisy. --jeff -- auricle@io.com

I get the idea everybody missed something as I wrote about Locust several times in the past, as he's been my number one idm-artist for the past 2 years, but I never saw any enthousiastic reactions on IDM. To my experience Locust is according to a lot of idm-lovers one of the best artists of the last couple of years. It doesnt mean that because on this mailing list he didnt get much attention in the past that the idm-public isnt highly enthousiastic about his work.I am to my believe one of the few belgian subscribers on this list but in the idm scene in Belgium (especially Ghent) he is appreciated by a lot of people i know. PS: I was wondering how the opinions are about the "live" performances by Mark Van Hoen.I saw him about five times now and i really enjoy his mixage of music and images. The last thing he did was this video in which he sampled all kind of stuff (queen, jimmy hendrix, etc) into "songs". Are there any other projects who use this technique in performing live? I was also wondering if anyone could tell me which female vocalists were used during the video, because I am not sure whether one of them was Annie Williams, the vocalist who worked with Mark in the past. No. All the vocals come from the video footage on screen. That's why you get Charles Manson doing a duet with Karen Carpenter !! Other footage includes the Dead Can Dance vocalist. I think I'd describe the project as 'ground breaking' and he tells me he is going to develop the idea further. Catch it if you can... Kevin Hector AUTOCREATION

jAE> He's got a new single jAE> called "no one in the world", but I've put off buying it jAE> since it has vocals by Karen Carpenter. I've only been away a few days .. to find you're all taking about Karen Carpenter. I was sent on this wayward path as well by a review I read in a rather obscure Dutch mag. To make matters worse, the song as brought out by Locust is only credited to van Hoen/Udell/Geld, whereas the 'orginal' version by W.F.O. on Excursions into Ambience is credited to Udell/Geld/P.B.Layer ... Searching the net revealed that Udell/Geld wrote musical scores for Broadway productions, like Purlie and Shenandoah, the latter was nominated for a Grammy award in the year 1975 .. the same year that the Carpenters actually won the Grammy for 'close to you'. So much for the historical side-tracking. Being in possession of the cd single, I can safely say that the vocals are by someone called Wendy Roberts, although I can't tell you who Wendy Roberts is. I wish I could. Like I wish I knew who W.F.O. is/are. Is there anybody out there with the original W.F.O. 12" No-One on Astralwerks [ASW 6106] (b-side is Autocreation 'dark smile') who can shed some light on this? jAE> influence on my buying records is female vocals; unless it's jAE> sarah peacock!) Anyway, the new album should be jAE> interesting.... The new Scala album is pretty brilliant .. I'm sure you wanna hear Sarah's version of Blondie's Heart of Glass ... b.t.w. The cover of the lp mentions that for contractual reasons it won't be available in the UK. Helen OnNow: Silvania - Ov: Locust mx
