I think we have all used the term "intelligent" at
some point. Back in the days you described there
wasn't alot of terminology for electronic music. Since
then there have been many more subgenres, (which helps
to describe/compare), and expanded terminology.
I hate to pick on this one phrase (but it's
appropriate)...someone refered to some artist as "more
intelligent dub techno" than other artists. I think
this list throws the word intelligent around a little
too much. It's not very descriptive (vague), and
sounds pretty pompous.
Whenever I have said IDM to a nonlist member, I have
to describe it in great detail, because "intelligent"
really says nothing about the music. So it takes twice
as long to explain or describe

I fully understand, we use to describe stuff as
experimental techno, more heady music, abstract, etc.

If someone said "serious techno", I might of thought
of someone like Surgeon or Jeff Mills. To me that was
some serious stuff :) But I know what you mean...

I never really pay much attention to what is
considered IDM, because I figure it's quality
electronic music...it's worth talking about.
