I might be wrong, but when I first heard the term 'intelligent techno' used
outside of a description a friend and I used to describe some of the music
we liked... I immediately thought it was a good way to seperate serious
electronic music listeners from the folks that just want a heavy bass beat
to bump their dance partner with on the weekends. Not that I hate all of
that booty-techno or anything, but in '93/'94, it wasn't really sufficient
anymore to just tell someone you liked 'techno' music when discussing music.
I didn't walk around saying 'intelligent techno' either really, it *is* kind
of a pretentious term, but 'serious techno' would have been better I think.
I don't know.. like I said, I might be wrong. I am from time to time. I
think it's meant to be a vague term, and I think (unlike many on this list)
that IDM can cover some of LTJ Bukem's stuff, as well as Underworld and even
most of the Ninjatune catalog. I believe that LTJ Bukem can fit in for the
same reason as Mr Scruff can fit in, because the music is thoughtful, well
put together, and dance floor friendly. No matter how many people would
respond and declare that it can only be IDM if it has "that autechre/mouse
on mars/plaid/early-aphex twin sound", I will still feel like that is
pidgeon holing this entire scene. Oh well, that's my email for the week.

describe any quality or characteristic of the music. It just shows you
either lack the vocabulary or the lack of knowledge about music to truly
describe it.

technically superior or harder to make. You could argue that it's less
dancefloor oriented...but I think that's a weak argument.
