I was at the Mazzo when Richie spun but i don't know too much about handbag. He did play one or two very disco-y tracks tho. The first half of his (2,5 hours) set was mainly hard & minimal (but still funky!) techno. After that he slowed down to spin some more mellow stuff, a bit housey even (i saw some Tribal UK lying around). Some of the records i remember hearing him play were the Detroit Anonymous 10" and Carl Craig's remix of La Funk Mob's 'Ravers Suck Our Sound' (Mo' Wax 10"). His mixing was really good (flawless) and his record selection too. He kept me dancing all the time anyway! Great atmosphere at the (small) Mazzo. In reply to what I played at MAZZO in Amsterdam last week... Whenever I play, I prefer to play longer sets... this allows me to play all types of what I consider good music. This could be slower/faster/house/ techno etc.. whatever... Some of the tracks that were listed were not played... well no by me anyways! The Bomb by The Bucketheads is one of my biggest tracks right now, as well as a ton of new heavy funky acid tracks from Holland and Germany. At the end of the day I'd rather hear a dj play various types of music throughout the night... this creates lows and highs or peaks and valleys, this is what creates atmosphere and makes a great night... I personally don't really enjoy going to a club and hearing 6 hours of banging acid or techno... or 6 hours of house... mix it up... there's too much good ELECTRONIC DANCE music out there not too! The old complaint about 45 minute sets at raves producing a lack of vibe is very true - long sets are better, but too often clubs and DJs create some kind of "policy" whereby every track sounds the same for 6 hours. So the "vibe" becomes a bore. On the few occasions where I hve been priveliged to DJ I have always made sure to vary my music. The only place where the music is varied in the UK seems to be the mainstream disco clubs, but then they go too far and don't let any section develop into a proper mood, plus they play crap old music as well as up-to-date stuff, and often the DJs can't even mix. Limelight in NYC is guilty of that, although they do have three different rooms with techno, house, and alternative rock. I must be the IDMer who enjoys Cosmic Baby. When I played "Herbst In Berlin" for my father, he swore that it must be new music by Phillip Glass.
