The old complaint about 45 minute sets at raves producing a lack of
vibe is very true - long sets are better, but too often clubs and DJs
create some kind of "policy" whereby every track sounds the same for
6 hours. So the "vibe" becomes a bore.
On the few occasions where I hve been priveliged to DJ I have always
made sure to vary my music.
The only place where the music is varied in the UK seems to be the
mainstream disco clubs, but then they go too far and don't let any
section develop into a proper mood, plus they play crap old music as
well as up-to-date stuff, and often the DJs can't even mix.
Variety is the spice of life, and a good DJ helps too!
