Hi folx: Following the recent threads on both lists concerning getting into music on the cheap, I requested and received some information from a company called MorningStar Solutions, a "multimedia products" company. The product in question is called the MacWaveMaker, the "performance standard for Macinotsh inboard midi synthesis." It's a NuBus card that uses the Mass (tm) wave-table sythesis engine and Kurzweil's SuperOrchestral patches from the Mark 10/150 digital piano. It's compatible with OMS, Apple's Midi Manager, FreeMidi, and QuickTime 2.0, has 357 melodic sounds, 15 drum kits w/ 400 percussion sounds, true 32-voice polyphony with 32 simultaneous timbres, dual 18-bit D/A converters, RCA stereo in/outs, etc., etc. I don't know what half of this stuff means. So I'm asking the music.community on the list - if I wanted to start with something, would this be a good place to start? The cost ("for a limited time") is $499. Thanks for any and all info. Well, in my personal opinion, unless you're going for that fat analogue sound, I think no setup is complete without some sort of sampling capability. I usually prefer to use samples to "round out" the sound of the track, to create something lush and organic... But that's just my personal opinion... For the cost it isn't too bad. no, it's not an ideal choice for ya. it's a good General MIDI synth, but as such it cannot use new samples and the programmability of the sounds is greatly limited. It's quite alot more (3X the price or so) but the only plugin card for the mac that i would recommend is the Samplecell II setup, which is extremely nice. on the other hand, you can get some midi sequencing software, a midi connector for your mac, and a used EPS sampling keyboard w/2mb for $800 or so probably. that's the way to go, unless you could be talked into buying a PC where boards that have alot of the functionality of the samplecell start at a mere $100 :) - Dan lo.fat.sig - The 8-Bit Collective/8-Bit Records * US/Finland - lo.fat.sig http://freedom.wit.com/~klf/klfhome.html * Dan Nicholson +1-908-687-3479
