Well, in my personal opinion, unless you're going for that fat analogue sound, I think no setup is complete without some sort of sampling capability. I usually prefer to use samples to "round out" the sound of the track, to create something lush and organic... But that's just my personal opinion... For the cost it isn't too bad.
