Just curious (as this doesn't get mentioned much): What think ye of the ilk such as is proffered by the Werk label - Black Rabbit Whorehouse, Skream, Pendle Coven some to mind as possible other suspects. Quite a mixed bag, but I've found myself really liking a lot of the Grim Dubs stuff. It seems to encompass a broad swath of styles, but certainly falls into IDM, albeit grimey idm. Although my fondness for funglish/drill-n-bass type things expired sometime last century for the most part, there's enough variety in these slabs to keep me collecting them - particularly the Werk label material. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Never heard of any of it, Jeff, so I did some research. That research led me to Stacs of Stamina. Boomkat (2005) found it to be 'killer' (shock horror <gasp>). Now, this drew me in: “It’s time to put your hands in the air, and wave them like you’ve just been discharged from care?”. But 'Eurocrunked-up 8-bit hoptronica' had me gagging and looking for the exit. Is there someplace you might recommend a novice to take a peek inside this peculiar sub-chamber? Grim Dubs perhaps? I got the Werk One compilation in the post today, and it's pretty good - not particularly grimey though. I'll definitely be checking out more of their stuff.

I really love the way that Boomkat always end their reviews with a one or two word exclamation - it's one of the few reassuring constants in a rapidly changing world. I've grown fond of this genre feature too. I just don't invest it with any meaning any more. Sort of like the free play of the signifier over the signified. Awesome. Boomkat's 'reviews' are so unreliable as to be completely useless. It's a classic moral hazard where they're (presumably) rewarded for writing puffery by increased sales. The worst part is, there doesn't seem to be a consistent scale of overflation as there is for, say, real estate listings. If we knew that "stellar" actually meant "barely mediocre" and "instant classic" always meant "skip this turd at all costs", the reviews could still be useful after they're run through the decoder ring. As it is, you have to mentally replace with "Lorem ipsum dolor est..." and listen to the clips, or find someplace else to get your review on. RIP absorb.org, you are sorely missed. -- - Eric Sorenson - N37 17.255 W121 55.738 - http://eric.explosive.net - - Personal colo with a professional touch - http://www.explosive.net - --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Werk, IMO, is the place to start anyway. I have the Stacs on order and it hasn't yet arrived, but Werk One and all 4 of the Grim Dubs exemplify what it is I am or am not saying. This material seems to be bridging elements of IDM with a dash of Tiefschwartz styled tech, noise and a smidgin (e.g., Pendle Coven) of hip hop. In short, it blends several styles, leaning this way and that in various tracks. I like it less when it moves into the more funglish aspects, but that isn't enough in degree or occurance to put me off. I hadn't thought about it in terms of similarity (bundling Pndle Coven with Skream, Black Rabbit Whorehouse and Werk releases) until I was burning off my vinyl rips onto cdr recently and these all seemed logical bedfellows. j

Thanks for the link...I SWEAR I'm not trying to be rude when I ask this...I'm genuinely interested...does ANYONE enjoy the MC who is constantly in the mix? Is he doing a good job? I couldn't take more than 10 minutes of him. And I like rap. What he's doing seems just annoying to me...perhaps live it might motivate the crowd but I kind of doubt it. I tried to listen to what he was saying and really didn't hear much content. Granted, I didn't listen to the whole thing and perhaps he got really eloquent midway through. Seriously, if anyone is feeling what he's doing please illuminate me so I can have a better understanding. Thanks. Leslie PS. The absolute worst MC I ever saw was Michael Dog of the Planet Dog crew...one night during a storming Ege Bam Yasi set at the Rocket, he went on and on about how much he loved strawberries and other fruits. Horrible but really charming and pretty funny. Gave me a laugh and he didn't stay on the mic much longer than 20 minutes. -----Original Message----- From: cutups [mailto:cutup@andythepooh.com] Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2005 9:19 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] Eurocrunked-up?
