the "perfect drug" remixes CD single is out in the US now with remixes by... MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO - jack does his first full strength jungle track. some of the stuff on Subliminal Sandwich was close, but this goes straight for the massive fucked up break and bowel loosening bass themes. the sounds are from the amen break, but twisted in a whole new way. jack is up to his usual high standard of audio trickery. satellite bleeps and rasta voices poking around the edges. snips of trent vocal floating in like otherwordly radio transmissions. squeaky turntable noises. this mixes smoothly into... PLUG - wow, a really excellent luke vibert mix here. lots of squelchy squidgy distorto jungle action with a really cool melody/chord progression built around that plinky piano theme from the end of the original version. a really cool bit of pitch mangled vocals leads into a seriously distorted drum 'n' synth sequence. he then brings in the melody from the end of the original and builds some really haunting sections around it. this is just amazing, one of the best vibert remixes ever i think. NINE INCH NAILS - yes, this is the version trent did with my ex-music-co-conspirator keith, and it is slamming. builds from minimal distorto drums to jungle to pounding wall of... uh.. stuff, with this excellent metallic bass sound underneath. SPACETIME CONTINUUM - starts off nice with tinkly clean synths before turning into a sorta clanky detroity thing. kinda boring and doesn't really go anywhere. if you're a jonah fan you'll love it i'm sure. THE ORB - for once an orb remix that actually bears some kind of resemblance to the original work! fragments of vocals spin in and out through the usual orb vocal mangling effects. the beat lurches along kinda like a demented techno version of tom waits. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...

This is a quite decent mix - I was expecting to hear an MBM track with amen in it at some point, and he does a decent job of arranging it. Hope the upcoming MBM remix disc is along these lines as well.

This track does have some cool beats in it (the static-tinged ones), but it really doesn't go anywhere, kind of like a lot of the 'Drum and Bass for Papa' tracks. Still a good mix though.

I have to agree with Jon here, this is a nice track - at least the first parts of it. The industrial-sounding part of the track annoys me, but the beginning and amen portion are excellent. Here's why: the AFX-sounding bit at the beginning keeps on going when the amen comes in. This gives the track a sort of rhythmic "anchor" while the hardstep breaks play off of the momentum of the background beat. This is what makes Squarepusher's 'Conumber' enjoyable. Bravo!

Now that's an idea - Tom Waits doing electronic music. I'd love to hear that! GD

it's not, really. there are some jungle inflected bits here and there but nothing as up front and dance floor oriented as the 9" nails mix. (well, the luke vibert mix is pure jungle fury but that's not jack per se). i have fond hopes that we will be hearing lots more jungle from jack...

i like the melodic ideas more than the beats. as i said, i found it surprisingly haunting.

IMO the new 'Original Fire' MBM EP is a thousand times more interesting than the new NIN EP. The same guys do it (Plug, Org and Jack) and the music is just plain in your face raw MBM goodness. New revisions of older classics, done because I think people accused Jack of being 'soft' after Subliminal Sandwich. There just a lot more going on- more robotic madness, more Jack tinkering with the clarinet. The NIN EP kicks, but it grows old after a while-none of the tracks really go anywhere. I was kind of bummed Jack actually used the Amen so blatantly- I always liked that he never, for the most part, used other peoples' drum looping/programming styles (actually most people copied him!) If you dig the NIN, you will love the MBM.... Peace, Nate PS---you wrote: but nothing as up front and dance floor oriented as the 9" nails mix. huh? The whole disc is stright up dope MBM stylee funk breaks. Sure it's not 160 BPM, but it rocks. *Definite* dance floor oriented. On Mon, 19 May 1997, Random Junk wrote:

well there's the inherent superiority of the mbm material, no doubt. but i still think the nin ep has some good ideas.

i just meant nothing was "straight" jungle. (except the plug remix). of course it's all dancy and super-good. jack is the most talented guy in the music biz today, after all. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...
