Well I don't. I don't really listen to IDM to learn (or whatever) anything thru lyrics. Mostly, I don't listen to music that way at all. To me, vocals are just like other sounds. I don't care if the sounds in the music (that includes vocals) contain some sort of information though I definitely prefer that they don't. To me, the voice is just another instrument with very specific timbres. I think it can be quite ok with bits of voices (sung or not) placed in the right context, but I *very* seldom find more profound *lyrics* appropriate in IDM. Well chosen cut-ups combine a good timbre with a *little* bit of verbal information. I think they are justified. It is very easy to make a bad cut-up ruin a song though, so it really calls for some consideration before throwing a cut-up in on top of a song...

I'm not very big on lyrics in dance music, especially in the form of wailing divas or, um, really cutesy vocals. However, the voice on its own is quite a rich instrument, and when I can't understand the vocal part on a really phat interesting piece of dance music I find myself often getting caught up in the enthusiasm of the music more than I think I would if a synth part was laid in the same place. Sometimes it scares me a little because I'd hate to think how vacuous the lyric content probably is :) I also like vocal samples when used to affect, and not abused. A recent record I heard (I think it's on Platipus) cuts the Bulgarian's Woman's Choir over a really active piece of music and it just sounds excellent. However, last night I walked off a dance floor because a reasonable piece of music started overlaying this really "girlish" (sorry for the stereotype) voice thing which just killed the tune for me. __________________________________________________________________________ _____ \___/\ Phil / / / / A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag / / is fast and bulbous / /____. got me? \/______\ __________________________________________________________________________
