What about the word progressive or hardcore? I hear people (not on this list) say, "yeah, that music is hardcare techno or this is progressive trance." Huh? Define hardcore and progressive in term of the music you like. What makes it hardcore? What makes Progressive trance different from regular trance? I have seen sections that are labeled in some stores as "Trance-breaks" and some other weird combinations. Jason Vague Terrain wrote:

Whenever I do my radio show one of the most popular call-ins I get is "Hey, I liked that track you played a few minutes ago.... err, what's it called?" And I tell them the artist and they'll reply "No, what I meant was, is it trance or house or what?" Hmm.... Aaron nd: Coffee from my nice +8 Records coffee mug.

this is during napalm jazz (sunday 11pm, ckia 96.1fm, quebec city, in case anybody who lives there subs to this list...). the show right before is mostly prog, but they usually end with a speed/death metal tune to mix with napalm jazz. during this time, some guy calls, audibly drunk, says 'wow, guys, that's really good stuff, hope you keep it going...' then of course we tell him we're not really doing metal, 'but we're playing even harsher stuff!' the guy seems happy & hangs up. show begins. it's rather noisy (as it usually is), & then it mixes into a particularly harsh merzbow tune. phone rings again -- same guy. 'what the fuck is that crap?!?!' he clearly didn't like it & screamed to get his metal back. but the comment he made was completely cryptic: 'this isn't music! it sounds like when you're alone in a forest!' unfortunately, we have no clue yet as to what forest it is where you can hear merzbow-like sounds among the wind-clapped branches & the birds. -- david

What bugs me about "intelligent ( . . . )" is that it encodes a compliment to itself and its audience into its very name. Can you think of any other genre-name that does this? Are there sections of record stores labelled "superior hip hop" or "excellent bluegrass" out there? This is a name that doesn't just refer to a field, but pats everyone in that field, and by extension everyone who listens to that music, on the back, and it can't help but generate a creepy, smug aura. second post of the day, time to get a life, Drew

How about "eclectic". Rings nicely with "electronic". Concise Oxford Dictionary: eclectic - adj. & n. adj. deriving ideas, tastes, style, etc., from various sources. Philos. & Art selecting one's beliefs etc. from various sources; attached to no particular school of philosophy. n. an eclectic person. a person who subscribes to an eclectic school of thought. b.
