no. music is not a line. just cos synths are new technology doesn't make synth music "the front of the line." there is some totally weak ass shit being coughed up by nerds with drumboxes and synthesizers every day. compare it to some old Kool 'n' The Gang or something - they are The Bomb... much more innovative and technically proficient even with 20 year old technology. every technology and style is new at some point. hell, when they invented the PIANO people were freaking out. (and never mind the PLAYER PIANO... EVIL!! It DOES ALL THE WORK FOR YOU... just like a sequencer, eh?) in its day, the violin was considered a direct line to satan. certain COMBINATIONS OF NOTES were considered demonic. you know what happened when Stravinsky's "Rite Of Spring" debuted? Riots in the fucking street!! people have never understood what is happening around them, and it has nothing to do with technology - it's all to do with ignorance.

you are really just discriminating in your own way, under the guise of being "open minded". It's sad, really. so much self-delusion.

it seems strange to me to get so worked up about vibrating air molecules. music is the best art form precisely because it is so abstract. tom ellard of severed heads once gave me some free advice, and now i'm gonna share it with you... find whatever genre of music you hate, i mean REALLY hate, and sit down and SERIOUSLY listen to it. you might not end up liking it but you will probably learn something. -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/bass-kittens/

Jon is right! I used to really hate country, then I listened to Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and Waylon Jennings. I learned that it isn't "country" I hate, its "young country" I hate!

Well, I may not agree to do just that... Listening to country for any length of time drives me batty. I can stand it, but not really listen to it. In a way, I use it as a "palette cleanser"... Gives me a break away from all the electronic noodling from all the CDs I listen to at work. At least that way, I can appreciate IDM when I go back to listen to it. btw... I picked up both MBM and Orbital yesterday. Absolute 100% mind f*ckedness. Had a _very_ productive day at work too. :-) -- guyjr@cc.gatech.edu a.k.a. Guy Elden, Jr.

As possibly the only member of this list who will admit to going to a Billy Ray Cyrus concert (hey, he's my best friend's cousin), I can assure you that seriously listening to "young country" doesn't help. :-) (Actually even BRC does a couple of really good songs. And Dwight Yoakam and Junior Brown are totally the bee's knees.) ObIDM: um, er, I brought the Cafe Del Mar compilation to work today . . . -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo)

First a little background for non-UK readers: there is a radio show on BBC Radio 4 called Desert Island Discs in which celebrities are interviewed and also play and talk about their favorite music, the idea being "If you were stuck on a desert island with a record played [or 2 1210s :-) ] which seven records would you take with you?" Anyway mostly is pretty boring but I once tuned-in because it was Brian Eno being interviewed and the first thing he said was that if he was infact stranded alone on a desert island he would take records in styles which previously he had not been able to enjoy or find interesting, I can only recall that he gave Thrash Metal as an example. Obviously he admitted this wasn't the point of the radio show and he went on to choose his seven favorite tunes, but I thought at the time that it was a f**king cool thing to say, and showed an open mindedness to all styles of music which was very refreshing. Come to think of it I met a friend the other week and on the same day in the same shop he had bought for himself a Deep Dish CD (deep house) and a Pantera CD (heavy metal/rock)!! Respect to all those who keep an open mind. Go easy gang, John's Tack
