Happy-Idm: Is there such a thing? Why am asking? Because few days ago some guy posted a message about a track simply saying that 'It makes him happy'. I'm curious about the effect the music has on you guys. Does it make you go deep in thought or just brain texture mapping? Or does it make you jump around the room? or both? Repeat: or RepeatS ? thanks for the recommendation. I bought it yesterday and didn't manage to listen to it properly but from what I did manage to catch I liked it. But not as much as spanners though it may grow. onnow: Goran Bregovic 'Underground' soundtrack. Does anyone know if anyone made IDM or Techno with european folk music elements ? and no, I don't mean Enigma. snowjob@actcom.co.il The Morpheus Equation: Start + Middle + End = Sand

While old and not as syncopated as much of what is cutting-edge IDM now, couldn't some of Ultramarine ("Every Man and Woman is a Star"-era) qualify as "happy" IDM? I'd say that some of B-12 (telefone xxx) is happy also. To me, a lot of IDM is ultimately happy because it has a futuristic feel that is generally positive and suggesting construction (instead of decay) though is a realistic (vs fantastic) way be the use of non-fanciful chords and key changes (not a lot of C-F-G maj stuff like fluff pop) IDM is very gradual, imho, and evokes slight moods, but specifically promotes complex thinking and observations... When I think of "European Folk", I think of Ireland, Scotland, England, Hungary, Germany, Russia, France, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Norway, Sweeden, The Netherlands, Italy and a few other countries that I've obviously missed. But somehow, I don't think of Banco De Gaia in the same sentence. It's a shame that Paul doesn't like Banco De Gaia, because I think the music is great. But then I wasn't going to suggest that Banco De Gaia uses "European" folk music elements either. Instead, Toby Marks (Banco De Gaia) uses samples from Middle Eastern, Asian, and African musical influences (IMO). Eylon: "Last Train To Lhasa" by Banco De Gaia is well worth a listen. Too bad there isn't more of it, no? Shame. I LOVE bouncy, trancy techno. The kind which makes you feel just like smiling, or like you're riding on a train. It's hard to do. Oh well, I'm just happy with what I've got. Yippee!

Hey, don't forget Speedy J... and... Ringo's plantation ep is also a pretty happy bouncy acid affair, and really damn good too! <=Susumo Yokota, the Frankfurt Tokyo Connection guy, on Sublime rec.) Music is prophecy: its styles and economic organisation are ahead of the rest of society because it explores, much faster than material reality can, the entire range of possibilities in a given code. Japan seems to have had a thing with working lots of melodicism into their dance music and the Japanese intechno scene of the past couple of years have put out what I'd consider happyidm: Frogman label, Sublime (not all!) label, Susumu Yokota/Frankfurt Tokyo Connection, Meditation Y.S., etc. spewing out the gloriously sweet textures. Funny that you said that about complex thinking because IDM (like Autechre or Aphex Twin's "Ventolin" and "HAB") is absolutely the best music to listen to while doing mathematics or physics. ********************* "I will not say that everything was utterly * Johan Jaatinen * common-place, because I doubt if anything can * aniag@info.liu.se * be that, except to utterly common-place people." ********************* Charles Dickens

it seems to me that i CAN'T study if i don't have some good (and esp. idm, though my collection is still limited) music playing in the background. perhaps it's because idm can stimulate the right side of the brain while the left side is busy with math or reading or whatever. so you have both sides going at once, which can't be a bad thing. all without you even knowing it! onnow: "corpse" : passengers ---------------------------- Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the men of old; seek what they sought. -Basho
