Anyone catch the PBS "Rock and Roll" documentary last night? The two episodes were _Punk_ (which I missed) and _The Perfect Beat_ (which I didn't). In a nutshell, the documentary painted a picture from "Planet Rock" through "Walk this Way", LL's "Radio", PE's "Fight the Power", Derrick May (a small on-camera interview where he described techno as the modern black man's soul music), New Order and "The Perfect Kiss", house music and "Vogue", and the Orb. Of course, considering that they compressed techno, rap, house, and ambient into a one-hour program may seem criminal, understand the series is on rock. Nonetheless, it was relatively interesting to see someone outside looking in making connections between different genres of music. Make a point of catching it next time around, probably before Christmas if they follow their usual pattern. I saw about half of the episodes (from "The Wild Side" forward, plus most of the one on what became the British heavy metal scene) and they were all absolutely top-notch -- even Robert Plant seemed kind of interesting. :-) -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo)

What I couldn't believe from the show was they actually mentioned Afrika Bambaataa stealing Kraftwerk's Trance Europe Express from the 70s to make Planet Rock (82). I mean, all of us from the 'old school' know that this is true but if you watch shows like mtv and they do similar shows, you won't hear that. Just that he's one of the pioneers of techno and funk here in the US. Well I'm glad Kraftwerk, and New Order for that matter, actually recieved some credit. I still can't believe they showed The Orb near the end. That was awesome. I thought they should have showed 808 State in there somewhere. I realize they only had an hour for the show but still, I think they're important in the Techno scene. I was also surprised they didn't metion 2 Live Crew in their banned segment. Back then, here in the Bible Belt, the 2 Live Crew was criticized more than the Beastie Boys. I really enjoyed it, and I thank the powers that be that I accidently stumbled on it (twice). I was channel flipping whilst baby-sitting and came across the Pistols. I watched it spellbound through The Orb (yay!!). I was very surprised by the interview with Derrick May. I thought he didn't do that interview type of thing. The second time I stumbled across it I managed to get a tape in the machine to record "The Perfect Beat" (yay!!).
